Innovation Works is a technology commercialization organization that invests seed capital in high-potential opportunities and provides strategic business assistance to early-stage technology companies.
Position Overview:
Innovation Works seeks an Executive In Residence to identify and accelerate commercialization of high potential clean energy technology companies in any of the following, or related areas: biomass, hydro, solar, wind, tide and geothermal resulting in job creation and enlarging Pennsylvania's energy sector.
Executives In Residence are responsible for working closely with startup companies to help them navigate the unique challenges of early stage growth. Executives In Residence work directly with the companies' CEO's, management team, and Boards of Directors to define, plan, attract resources, and execute against strategic initiatives in the areas of fundraising/financial management, product development/commercialization, sales and marketing, and organizational development.
Executives In Residence also lead Innovation Works' investment efforts in early-stage companies, managing the process from identification of investment opportunities through due diligence efforts, initial funding, and representing Innovation Works' interests as a Board Observer.
Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work closely with team of Executives In Residence to leverage complementary industry and functional expertise while maintaining individual ownership and responsibilities for a set of companies
- Provide guidance, assistance to entrepreneurs and early stage technology companies
- Identify high-potential companies with the potential to drive significant economic growth and partner with them to define a business and financial plan to help them execute against growth objectives
- Work with companies to define a strategic operating plan and provide coaching, assistance, and resources to help companies reach their objectives
- Lead Innovation Works' efforts in due diligence of the market and growth potential of candidate investment companies
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Promote entrepreneurship and technology in the region by representing Innovation Works at various energy technology-related events
- Define and drive projects that enhance Innovation Works' ability to provide resources and knowledge to the regional technology community
- Assist in creating strong partnerships with the top universities/research institutions. (NETL, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University etc.)
- Help to leverage Pennsylvania's energy infrastructure support with organizations such as Sustainable Pittsburgh, Green Building Alliance, Three Rivers Clean Energy fund, SWPA TBED Partners, etc.
Qualifications:
Proven track record of success and performance in the following areas:
- Significant industry expertise (minimum 10 years) in the one or more of the technology sectors above, including direct functional responsibility for defining, building, and launching technology-based products to the commercial market, and other functional areas.
- Prior C-Level management experience with both large and start-up technology companies preferred
- Breadth of technology and commercial market experience preferred with the ability to quickly learn about new industries, business models, and technologies
- Prior experience in investment-oriented or management consultant industries a plus
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or business required, MBA preferred
