Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries (FACT) is a grass roots watershed advocacy group formed in 1998 to protect and preserve Alum Creek. FACT has completed a Watershed Action Plan (WAP) with funding and endorsement from the Ohio EPA. FACT has since received additional project funding to implement the WAP, which includes several education components and the removal of two lowhead dams.
The Executive Director/Watershed Coordinator is responsible for executing the WAP implementation and preparing corresponding quarterly and semi-annual fiscal and project reports as well as carrying out the activities identified in the FACT Strategic Plan. As the sole paid staff person of FACT at this time, the Executive Director/Watershed Coordinator serves as the face of the organization in day to day activities.
Reports to: FACT Executive Committee
The selected candidate will be proficient in public relations, public speaking, relationship building and the technical aspects necessary in the implementation of the Watershed Action Plan. The Executive Director/Watershed Coordinator will form alliances with diverse groups of stakeholders in the watershed, including FACT members, volunteers, local governments and organizations, and state and regional agencies, to carry out the implementation of the Watershed Action Plan and to promote the overall protection of the creek.
A critical aspect of the job is educating the public and appropriate local, state, and federal government bodies regarding the value of the Alum Creek watershed and the need to preserve and improve its water quality.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate, encourage and promote implementation of Watershed Action Plan by local stakeholders
- Prepare quarterly in-kind and semi-annual progress reports to funding agencies
- Involve / network with / develop working relationship with a diverse group of stakeholders in implementing WAP
- Fundraising- including organizing annual events, membership mailings, and grant writing
- Build public support for river protection and restoration through developing and/or coordinating education programs, writing newsletter, writing press releases, etc.
- Recruit and manage volunteers
- Give presentations to the public, community organizations, schools, etc.
- Support and involve FACT executive board in strategic planning and implementation
- Attends board meetings, prepares and circulates agendas an meeting notes
Qualifications
- bachelors degree in a related field (ecology, biology, geology, etc)
- proficient in public and personal relations (ability to work with people)
- proficient in technical aspects of watershed plan implementation
- excellent speaking and writing skills
- experience working with volunteers
- experience coordinating events
- experience with publicity
- excellent organizational skills
- excellent computer skills
- excellent public speaking skills
- ability to interpret technical documents
- experience with grant management and reporting
- strong ability to multitask
- experience with Microsoft Frontpage desirable
- MUST be a highly motivated, self-starter with the ability to work well independently
Salary Range: Starting salary $30,000 to $35,000 (plus benefits), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
