Description

~ Mass Hike is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which aims to make nature more accessible to people living in Boston. ~

The importance of time spent in nature for both children and adults is well supported by literature. Spending time in the outdoors has health and psychological benefits and can also aid in children’s emotional, physical, and mental development. Unfortunately, the majority of state parks and nature reserves in Massachusetts are accessible only by personal vehicle. Individuals and families with low incomes are at an exceptional disadvantage in this regard, as this population is less likely to own a personal vehicle while more likely to experience medical conditions associated with lifestyle and environment.

Mass Hike aims to reduce this disparity by providing low-cost transportation into nature, building children’s and their families’ confidence and comfort in navigating the outdoors, and fostering a community of diverse individuals who engage with nature together. At Mass Hike, we believe that spending time in nature is medicine. We strive to make this health resource available to everyone regardless of their income or assets.

We not only provide customers with convenient, affordable transportation into nature, but also support riders throughout the journey with trail guides, first aid, and navigation support. Furthermore, through partnerships with various income-based housing developments in Boston, we are able to get our services to those who need it most, providing children and families with reduced-cost tickets for as little as $2.
