~ Ruffner Mountain Nature Center is a 1,011 acres (4 km2) nature preserve located in the eastern portions of Jefferson County, Alabama near Birmingham's suburb, Irondale. The preserve includes a visitor center containing native Alabama animals including raptors, snakes, turtles and owls. ~

Position Overview

Ruffner Mountain Nature Center is seeking an Executive Director. 

Responsibilities

The ED will:

  • Lead the organization;
  • Represent, promote and defend the mission;
  • Understand and manage financial matters;
  • Prepare budgets;
  • Have sound knowledge of risk management and best management practices;
  • Manage and secure physical property assets and equipment;
  • Work with legal matters and contracts;
  • Write reports;
  • Work closely with board members, committees and other volunteers;
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate staff;
  • Present educational and promotional programs to a wide variety of audiences; Develop and collaborate onstrategic and long term planning; and
  • The ED will develop or supervise staff in all aspects of fundraising including individual and major gifts, grants, corporate and public support, memberships, special events and annual and capital campaigns.  

Qualifications 

  • The ED will hold a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred.
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years advanced professional experience in non-profit management and/or general business management.
  • Candidates must have significant fundraising experience preferably with non-profits and/or any other successful fund-raising capital campaign(s).
  • Additionally, the Ed will have a proven passion for conservation, environmental awareness and education, enjoy working with children and adults, exhibit comfort in social situations, be an experienced public speaker, and have a history working with public policy makers.
