The David Brower Center (DBC), located in Berkeley, California, is a vibrant place that inspires,sustains, and convenes people committed to environmental and social action. The Center offers office space, conference and event facilities, educational and arts programs, and the award-winning Gather Restaurant - all in one of the greenest buildings in the Bay Area.

It is named to honor David Brower, who many consider the father of the modern environmental movement. Founded in 2009, the DBC's mission is to inspire current and future generations of activists, with the goal of making sustainable thinking and practices the mainstream in business, government, education, and culture.

With its celebrated building as an anchor, the Center was established to:

  • Inform the public about the environmental and social justice challenges we face and the bold actions that must be taken;
  • Inspire people to recognize their power and responsibility to act on behalf of the Earth; and,
  • Connect people and organizations dedicated to social justice and environmental sustainability.

Position Overview:

Our Next Executive Director:

The David Brower Center is seeking an Executive Director who will be a dynamic leader, a creative entrepreneur with business acumen, and a catalyst for growth. This is an exceptional opportunity for an executive who has passion for the environment, understands how environmental issues intersect with social justice issues and, who can envision the vital role of the DBC as a nexus for change.

The new Executive Director will bring a track record of success in managing the operations of a complex organization. They will be exquisitely diplomatic, work well with teams and individuals, and have operated successfully in nonprofit organization settings. Their skills in engaging the board, staff, and community will result in vibrant programs that elicit higher visibility and a wider circle of support for the mission.

The new Executive Director will bring experience and competence in effectively managing and implementing plans, and cultivating strategic alliances to further the goals of DBC. The Executive Director will have the competency, temperament, and experience for working creatively and
cooperatively with the diverse environmental community within and beyond the immediate building.

In addition, the new Executive Director will be confident in their ability to generate revenues and to lead a comprehensive fundraising strategy, leveraging the collective efforts of board members, staff, volunteers, and consultants.

Qualifications:

The Executive Director should have experience in:

Developing and executing self-sustaining, strategic business plans;
Building consensus among diverse groups of people;
Building teams to solve problems;
Fundraising plan development and implementation, including acquisition of major gifts;
Budget analysis and management of finances and operations;
A background that reflects a deep commitment to environmental issues; and,
Working with non-profit boards.

The Candidate's Skills and Areas of Strength should include:

Ability to create a shared vision, and manage the systems and processes necessary to translate that vision into practical outcomes;
Leadership and organizational development abilities, with competency in supervision;
Marketing and communications skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with internal and external stakeholders;
Ability to bring people and communities together, and develop positive and long-lasting relationships;
Ability to work effectively with staff, tenants, and community stakeholders
Diplomacy skills and high emotional intelligence; ability to make difficult decisions;
Confident, open to learning, and able to take constructive feedback
Ability to think out of the box; and,
Effective work habits, balanced with a sense of humor.

Strongly Preferred:

Experience managing a multi-faceted, community-oriented facility
An advanced degree, preferably an MBA
