The Hawai`i Conservation Alliance (HCA), a partnership of federal, state and private conservation and education organizations, and the Hawai`i Conservation Alliance Foundation (HCAF), a nonprofit organization, seek its next dynamic and visionary Executive Director.
Position Overview:
The Executive Director will facilitate collaborative leadership of the HCA to promote effective long-term management of native ecosystems and unified leadership and advocacy on conservation issues critical to Hawai`i. S/he will report to the University of Hawai`i Director, Center for Conservation Research & Training, and liaises with the chairs of the HCA and the HCAF.
Responsibilities:
The next HCA Executive Director will:
- Build successful and diverse collaborations among the 19 HCA partner agencies to achieve strategic and measurable conservation outcomes;
- Lead, supervise and coordinate all HCA activities, including workshops, forums, committees and outreach, including the annual Hawai`i Conservation Conference;
- Develop and implement strategies for generating contributed and earned income streams to support operations and projects;
- Manage, cultivate and nurture engagement with funders, partners and stakeholders within the community;
- Set and manage an annual budget;
- Supervise and coach 2-4 staff and intern and oversee contractors;
- Facilitate quarterly meetings, leadership summits, work of standing HCA committees and annual planning retreat of the HCA;
- Serve as the organization's chief public spokesperson;
- Oversee the direction of programmatic policies, operations and organizational development;
- Plan, implement and coordinate conservation and outreach initiatives;
- Liaise with the Pacific Island Climate Change Cooperative, HCA partner agencies and the broader conservation community in matters of mutual strategic concern; and
- Incrementally build the governance and funding capacity of the Hawai`i Conservation Alliance Foundation in order to implement conservation projects.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
- Baccalaureate degree in the biological sciences, public or nonprofit administration or a related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional, management and leadership experience in project development, policy, planning and management of conservation issues.
- Demonstrated abilities in executing strategic and operational plans;
- Ability to write and verbally communicate effectively and persuasively;
- Ability to facilitate networking, collaborative leadership and problem-solving;
- Demonstrated ability to leverage diverse ideas, perspectives/expertise and people;
- Demonstrated expertise in building the financial, governance and programmatic capacity of an organization;
- Strategic visionary with a propensity for decisive, results-driven actions;
- Effective advocacy and public speaking skills;
- Successful track record and experience in fundraising, grant seeking and grants management; and
- Authentic, inclusive, collaborative and values-driven leadership style.
Desired Experience / Skills / Abilities:
- Expertise in developing organizations/businesses and boards of directors;
- Working knowledge of key conservation issues specific to Hawai`i, including Hawaiian socio-cultural and ecological history;
- Expertise in building coalitions and communities;
- Working knowledge of Web 2.0 technology, strategic communications and marketing.
- Advanced degree in related field.
