Description
Move San Diego, Inc. (MSDI), a new transportation reform organization focused on the enhancement of alternative transportation, a reduction in automobile trips, and generally in the improvement of transportation systems in San Diego County, seeks an Executive Director with an entrepreneurial spirit and experience in management.
MSDI recently received startup funding for two full-time positions, including this Executive Director position and a support position, as well as funding for a number of transit planning and community education projects. The Executive Director will work with MSDI's Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and constituency to accomplish these projects, develop new projects and build organizational capacity to ensure continued organizational viability.
The Executive Director will dedicate at least 50 percent of his or her time to overall management of the organization with particular emphasis on fundraising, long-range capacity building and establishing a strong administrative infrastructure. The Executive Director will hire and supervise staff, work with a wide range of civic reform and human service groups, engage elected officials, agency staff and other decision-makers and mobilize the public to support MSDI's policy goals.
Candidates with experience in some or all of the following are encourage to apply:
Management of strategic planning efforts and development of strategic plans;
Fundraising, including proposal and grant writing, major donor development and/or direct mail/web solicitation;
Administrative management including administration, financial management, grant administration, staff supervision and/or volunteer management;
Management of complex projects such as advocacy, marketing, or political campaigns or infrastructure development projects;
Experience working with coalitions, staff, volunteers, community leaders and Boards of Directors in a non-profit setting;
Progressively responsible experience in organizing, media relations and lobbying, with knowledge of and experience in:
o Volunteer activist recruitment, management and engagement;
o Community organizing, including local organization development and relationship building with allied organizations;
o Coalition management and organizing;
o Event management;
o Media relations;
o Government agency relations; and/or
o Elected official relations;
Knowledge of alternative transportation development, transit planning/management, transportation planning, and/or San Diego politics;
Familiarity with current trends in environmental and alternative transportation issues, and a demonstrated commitment to these issues; and
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in business, management, nonprofit management, planning, transportation engineering, law, communications or similar and five years comparable experience. Masters degree or higher preferred, but not required.
Scope and depth of technical skills/knowledge:
Demonstrated computer skills, including use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management. Demonstrated ability to use internet technologies including email list serves and websites. Experience with web page development and authoring and database development is also desired but not necessary; and an
Ability to understand and analyze financial data including knowledge of standard bookkeeping practice and a record of financial accountability.

Leadership skills and the ability to translate vision into accomplishments;
Well developed written and oral communication skills;
Strong organizational skills;
Political savvy;
Fluent in English and Spanish;
Effectiveness in varying environments and with varying tasks and responsibilities;
Comfort with a diverse communities and individuals, including people with widely divergent socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs and an interest in strengthening individual capacity to engage in advocacy; and an
Ability to travel for the organization when required, and to work evenings and weekends when needed.
Salary: $50,000 to $60,000 DOE + Benefits
