Description
Duties:
The Executive Director serves in a visible and professional role for the LTWA, a
nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Upper Little
Tennessee River and its watershed. The Executive Director collaborates with the
Board to allow the organization to develop and pursue its mission by providing
technical and educational direction and performing administrative duties. The
Executive Director serves at the pleasure of the Board, with supervision and
communication as needed through the Board's Executive Committee and its
Chair.
Specific Duties Include:
- Work with the board and its committees to promote and enhance the core
projects of the organization: streambank stabilization, riparian restoration,
biomonitoring and education. - Provide program leadership and direction, implementing a short and long
term program of work. - Build membership and recruit volunteers for LTWA programs and
projects. - Oversee public relations for the Association, including publication of
newsletters and informational flyers and the production of relevant maps;
plan quarterly public programs. - Organize and conduct field days, tours and workdays to raise awareness
about LTWA's core projects and water quality issues. - Maintain and build relationships with relevant individuals, organizations and
stakeholders; work collaboratively on projects approved by the board that
help meet the mission of the LTWA and to build a strong conservation
ethic in the watershed. - Work with the board to design and implement a long-term fundraising
strategy, identifying funding opportunities; seeking and applying for grants
and other sources of funding for LTWA projects and administrative needs. - With the Finance Committee, develop and monitor a budget; maintain
professional and up-to-date records on financial transactions, membership,
grants and all aspects of LTWA programs. - Work with the Board Chair to plan monthly Board meetings and an annual
advisory board meeting; work with Committee Chairs to plan committee
meetings. Attend Board and committee meetings. Build on the strengths of
the board by working with the individual members and committees to
provide focus to organizational efforts. - Monitor and implement the organization's strategic plan.
Qualifications:
- Four (4) year degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent
experience. - Experience or training in some or all of the following:
- Grant writing
- Nonprofit organization management
- Program administration
- Conservation of natural resources
- Environmental education
- Public relations
- Expertise in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Access. QuickBooks,
PageMaker and web design (Adobe GoLive) experience are preferred. - GIS/Arcview experience-making maps and conducting simple analyses.
- Must be proficient and effective at written and spoken communication with
a broad range of audiences. - Must have current drivers' license, an acceptable driving record and be
bondable.
Location:
Franklin, North Carolina is a small town of 3000 located in the midst of the
Southern Appalachians. Located 65 miles southwest of Asheville, Franklin is
near the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Appalachian and Bartram
Trails. Franklin provides a congenial small town atmosphere. Western Carolina
University, with a public repository library and program in natural resources
management, is located 30 minutes away in Cullowhee. Atlanta and Athens (GA)
are just over 2 hours away.
Compensation:
The Executive Director's position is potentially a full-time permanent position.
Salary is dependent on experience.
