The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is a not for profit trade association, representing the interests of materials and products that meet American Society of Testing and Materials Specifications for Compostability.

The BPI is seeking an intern to assist the Executive Director with on-going projects and to help establish a new division focusing on materials with significant biobased or renewable content.

The BPI is the leading certifier of compostable products. Its trademark is recognized throughout North America as the definitive sign of compostability. The organization is the link between raw material suppliers, converters and the composting community.

The intern's responsibilities will include:

o Coordinate product applications for the BPI's "Compostable Logo" effort;
o Track and monitor the certification process for new applicants
o Provide public information regarding the benefits of compostable products and those with renewable content;
o Assist in the development of the BPI's new website: http://www.biobasedproducts.org/
o Provide other administrative support

This internship is an excellent opportunity to: Learn about the benefits of compostability and renewable resources;  Gain an understanding of plastics, packaging, food scrap diversion and solid waste issues; Participate in discussions relating to greenhouse gases, along with those pertaining to solid waste, renewable resources and plastics.

The candidate must possess very good written and verbal communication skills, be able to work in an unsupervised environment and demonstrate the ability to complete key tasks in a timely manner. Required computer skills include MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. PC is preferable to MAC.

The internship will require 10-15 hours per week, spread over 3 days.

The office is located in on the East 69th St in Manhattan, NY. No travel will be required. Stipend will be $400/semester to cover transportation and lunch. Position will start shortly after January 28, 2008 and continue until June, 2008.
