Position Overview

This position is a field technician position and requires in state travel. Will perform instrument audits for the air monitoring network and run the smoke motioning network, including scheduling and conducting particulate, gas, and MET instrument audits; scheduling and conducting verifications and calibrations of smoke monitor equipment; assisting with special studies; and maintaining all audit and smoke monitoring network equipment.

Responsible for writing and / or maintaining written documentation of processes as SOPs and Standard Work documents. Assisting with the network coordination and other quality assurance related tasks, including siting sites and instruments, documentation of networks, and QAPP documents.

Responsibilities

Audits (Performance Evaluations):

  • Conduct all audits on instruments & other audit related tasks, e.g., yearly audit schedule, maintaining audit equipment, participation in EPA & source audits, & maintaining the gas bottles for the monitoring program to ensure the ambient air monitoring network meets all EPA requirements.
  • Independently develops the report audit reports to properly document and communicate ADEQs compliance with federal regulations.
  • Train staff on Audit process and procedures when needed.
  • Collect scientifically defensible high quality environmental data that meets data quality objectives in accordance with Quality Assurance Plan.

Smoke Monitoring Network:

  • Conduct all verifications, calibrations, and maintenance on instruments & other network related tasks, e.g., quarterly schedule, maintaining equipment, & coordinating with forecasters and forest service to ensure the smoke monitoring network meets all requirements and customer needs.
  • Independently develops the field sheets and other needed reports to properly document and communicate ADEQs compliance with federal regulations.
  • Maintains, service, and operate visibility cameras included in the network.
  • Train staff on monitoring process and procedures when needed.

Special Air Monitoring Studies:

  • Plan, coordinate, conduct special monitoring studies needed for research regarding air monitoring in the State of Arizona.
  • This includes studies needed per the Five-Year Network Assessment, Smoke Monitoring Network needs, and other air monitoring studies needed to support ADEQ air monitoring efforts.
  • May also assist with the writing of reports for special monitoring studies.
  • Perform basic analysis of environmental data for attainment of standards, trends, equipment performance, pollution source identification, or condition.

Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of methodologies and techniques for collecting environmental data including the design and function of environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of agency policies, state & federal regulations, quality assurance and control, and data entry using relational databases.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of existing and new environmental monitoring techniques and equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate field and office tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring results to senior staff through reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree plus 4-7 years of experience conducting environmental monitoring or a Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field with 1-5 years’ experience.
  • Pertinent training such as military or trade schooling may be evaluated for equivalency with college level coursework.

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:

  • Driver's license - Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.
  • Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
