Description

Realizing the potential of the Olympic Sculpture Park, the Environmental Steward will work in partnership with SAM staff and environmental organizations to develop and implement innovative programs that educate visitors about our urban environment and its connection to broader global environmental issues.

Additionally, the Environmental Coordinator will work internally with SAM staff to promote and develop strategies to further SAM's environmental goals for operating its five facilities. The normal working hours of this position is Tuesday to Saturday. The exempt position reports to the Manager of the Olympic Sculpture Park.

Essential Functions

  1. Conceptualize, develop and implement in coordination with the relevant departmental representatives (may include Education, Curatorial, Facilities and Operations) innovative environmental programming utilizing the Olympic Sculpture Park and the Vivarium as science lab and art studio.  
  2. Build and sustain meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with environmental and urban planning organizations in order to expand internal expertise and capacity for environmental programming.  
  3. In collaboration with SAM staff (may include Education, Facilities and Operations) engage and manage volunteer Park Stewards and Vivarium Ambassadors, who will assist the OSP gardener in stewarding the park precincts, and educate visitors on native plantings and forest ecology.  
  4. Oversee the Shoreline Monitoring and Education grant from State Department of Fish and Wildlife to disseminate shoreline monitoring information, build broad public awareness of OSP design and development strategies, and create interactive learning mechanisms for K-12 teachers and students.  
  5. Oversee monitoring of shoreline and underwater habitat by the University of Washington and make visible research findings. Works with Park Manager to ensure compliance of all Shoreline habitat permit conditions and agreements. Ensures submittal of any necessary progress or compliance reports to governmental permitting agencies.  
  6. Further the environmental agenda throughout SAM's operations by overseeing and guiding SAM Goes Green staff committee. Responsibilities will include development of a three-year work plan that identifies organizational opportunities and priorities for SAM to become more environmentally responsible.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  1. BS or BA or the appropriate and relevant combination of education and experience.  
  2. 1 - 2 years in a related work environment, experience working in/ with public venues and/or experience with event support, parks and recreation, hospitality/guest services, or other types of customer focused experience. Museum and art experience desired.  
  3. Demonstrated significant knowledge of horticulture and environmental issues required.  
  4. Experience creating partnerships with environmental organizations and developing collaborative programs.  
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills; strong track record in exercising sound, timely judgment in dynamic environment.  
  6. Strong organizational skills; ability to work effectively with personnel from many disciplines; experience handling daily operations and in timely, effective decision-making.  
  7. Demonstrated proficiency with and accuracy in using Microsoft Office products.  
  8. Ability to carry out and adhere to museum policies and procedures for security and safety of visitors, artwork, and museum facilities in a complete, consistent, and timely manner and the ability to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.

Working Conditions

Work will be both indoors in an office setting and outdoors year-round in a variety of weather conditions. Work may require occasional long periods of sustained standing. Frequently provide public programming or volunteer training which will periodically involve bending, stooping, climbing up a variety of inclines and accessing outdoor areas on surfaces such as asphalt, cement, soil and rough or uneven terrain.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions

Standing/Walking/Sitting: Approximately 30% of time is spent seated. Balance of the time (approximately 70%) is spent walking/ standing or moving around work areas.

Speaking/Hearing: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with co-workers, the public, and outside agencies, by telephone and in person.

Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to effectively use the computer screens and interpret written information.

Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling: The ability to lift and carry weights that may exceed 50 pounds.

Stooping/Kneeling: The ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for accessing supplies and performing inspections.

Reaching/Handling: Good manual dexterity is necessary for computer keyboard use and for retrieving and working with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
