Description:

The California State Coastal Conservancy is seeking an environmental consultant to provide project management services (“project director”). The successful consultant will have a broad range of relevant environmental and related experience to coordinate the Conservancy’s regional effort to eradicate nonnative species of Spartina (cordgrass) in San Francisco Bay. Nonnative cordgrass threatens to colonize thousands of acres of critically important tidal flat and salt marsh habitat. For detailed information on the project visit www.spartina.org

Responsibilities:
The project director will take a major role in assisting the Conservancy in moving its Spartina project from the planning stages to full implementation of on-the-ground vegetation control. The project director will work closely with Conservancy staff and oversee the work of at least two field coordinators and the work of other Conservancy contractors, specializing in environmental regulation and species monitoring and eradication. The director will ensure that environmental compliance requirements are met in all aspects of the project, work to forge interagency agreements with local, state and federal government agencies and other stakeholders, and oversee species identification and mapping, environmental monitoring, and public outreach components of the project. As the regional coordinator, the director will provide timely and technically accurate communication to stakeholders regarding Spartina issues and publicly represent the Spartina project, its goals and status, as needed, including regional and national conferences, the media, and citizens groups.

Essential Qualifications:
· At least three years of relevant management experience with a demonstrated ability to effectively lead and motivate, juggle competing priorities, and strategically plan;
· Direct experience with federal and state environmental compliance requirements, regulations and procedures (CEQA/NEPA/ESA/CWA);
· Fieldwork experience in some aspect of conservation biology, ecology, or other relevant area;
· Knowledge and understanding of invasion biology, vegetation management, and habitat restoration;
· Desire to work with and assist in building a strong team of conservation minded consultants and contractors. Experience providing contractor oversight.
· Excellent communication skills including public speaking, written communication; strong interpersonal and partnership-building skills;
· Proven ability to raise funds and write competitive grants;
· Knowledge of the use and application of computer technologies and programs, especially geographic information systems (ArcView);
· Experience with GPS data collection, knowledge of fundamental mapping procedures and data management.

Desirable Qualifications:
· Masters or other advanced degree
· Familiarity with the San Francisco Bay region Background in estuarine ecosystems and wetland ecology.

California Small Business Enterprise or Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Compensation and Contractual Information
The consultant selected will be retained as an independent contractor, with funding, in part or whole, through anticipated Calfed and other grants. The project director will be compensated at an hourly rate, commensurate with education and experience, up to a maximum of $90,000 annually. Subject to contract negotiation, approved expenditures incurred in connection with project activities may also be reimbursed. The consultant services are being initially sought for an 18-month period. The vision for this project is long-term, however, and it is anticipated that the consultant contract may be extended pending funding. As a contractor to the Coastal Conservancy the project director does not receive benefits (health, retirement, etc…). The project director reports to and coordinates closely with the Conservancy staff for direction, assignments and oversight.
