Versar’s Natural Resources Service Area has a national reputation for high quality research in freshwater, estuarine, marine, and terrestrial environments. The scope of the project activity within the Natural Resources Service Area ranges from designing and implementing field studies to complex ecosystem impact assessment and resource management. The Columbia Office’s natural resources professional staff works within an informal, interactive research atmosphere that provides opportunities for individual growth and advancement. Projects are supported by an array of corporate resources including field sampling equipment, boats, biological laboratories, statistical analysis and GIS tools, and document production facilities.

Position Overview

Versar’s is seeking an Environmental Scientist / Data Analyst to work in the Columbia, MD location. The ideal candidate will have strong skills in data management analysis, works well as a member of a team, and enjoys technical and scientific challenges.

Responsibilities

Technical training or experience includes the following:

  • Data analysis and management (Microsoft Access and Excel, VBA, SQL).
  • Statistical applications to natural resource and ecological problems (programming skills required, preferably in R and/or SAS).
  • Perform project delivery activities such as report writing, undertaking and organizing data collection and survey field work, data and literature review, and development of recommendations for clients.
  • Provide technical support for renewable energy projects with an emphasis on reviewing environmental aspects related to facility licensing and permitting projects.
  • Coordinate with the State’s contractors, subcontractors, regulatory agencies, generation companies, utilities, and other interested parties during various projects.
  • Coordinate the review and regulatory analysis for various solar facility, wind, transmission line, and electric power plant projects in compliance with local, state, and federal policy.
  • Background in natural and/or marine resources.
  • This position provides support to a variety of projects, including but not limited to, fisheries, marine benthic ecology, freshwater streams, watershed modeling, and water quality analyses.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience in a relevant discipline of the biological or environmental sciences.
  • Good oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Experience in technical writing is desirable.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
  • Successful candidates must be flexible, self-starters, able to creatively solve problems, capable of good internal and external client interactions, able to meet deadlines, and assist in development of new projects.
