Seattle Public Utilities provides a reliable water supply to more than 1.3 million customers in King County, and provides essential sewer, drainage, and solid waste services to City of Seattle customers.

Position Overview: 

Want to take an active role in protecting our local waterways? Does being a "pollution detective" sound interesting to you?

Seattle Public Utilities needs an Environmental Investigator to lead a program to identify and eliminate illicit discharges to the City drainage system and help the City comply with the Stormwater National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop/refine program approach and coordinate with other team members. Define procedures, quality assurance project plans (QAPPs), sampling and analysis plans and define field methods and logistics.
  • Organize the work of seasonal field teams and assist in collecting water samples within the City's drainage system.
  • Submit and track samples delivered for laboratory analysis. Receive field and lab data, review for quality according to QAPPs and manage Access and enterprise-level databases.
  • Analyze data and determine where follow-up and investigation of potential sources is needed, including further sampling efforts.
  • Work internally with City staff and property owners to correct problems and eliminate pollution sources, enforce the City's Stormwater Code when appropriate.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports to meet permit requirements.
  • Contribute to other source control monitoring and inspection activities as part of the Source Control and Monitoring Team, whose mission is to reduce pollution sources within the City of Seattle.
