Position Overview

This position is responsible for resource recovery and is integrally involved in accomplishing Zero Waste for the University.

Responsibilities 

  • Works closely with the PPD Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator and Solid Waste Vendor and the Department of Sustainability to conduct studies in order to identify waste streams that can be diverted into recyclable resources.
  • Researches trends and develops innovative and advanced techniques in zero waste and resource recovery. Implements and monitors the operational processes for the reduction of waste.
  • Serves as the project manager or lead in projects designed to divert waste from the landfill, which might include programs such as composting, gasification, Bio digestion and others.
  • Serves as the University's technical expert for these matters, providing strategic direction and program suggestions for sustainable waste management - responsible for the progressive development and oversight of these sustainable programs.
  • This position is responsible for developing initiatives to reduce waste through acquisition methods. The incumbent will work with University stakeholders such as Purchasing, IT, Research, Stores and Sustainability to develop, implement and monitor programs for reducing waste due to sustainable acquisition.
  • Produces reports on the recycling, diversion and aversion programs. Makes presentations to UF Administration, State and County Government, Facility, Staff and Committees as well as other stakeholders regarding these programs and reports
  • This position works closely with and supports sustainable waste programs developed by the areas responsible for e-waste, furniture and supplies as well as the Department of Sustainability, Waste Vendors, UF Sustainability Committee, Green Teams and other Sustainable waste programs on campus.
  • Advises and assists the Assistant Director of Resource Management, in planning, directing and reporting all waste reduction and resource recovery activities for the University of Florida; and in the administration and interpretation of related regulations , laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates on UF and local committees involved in waste reduction and diversion. Interprets institutional policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations, and to communicate the interpretation to others as required. 

Qualifications 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.
  • Class E State of Florida driver's license required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree preferably in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science with appropriate area of specialization in Sustainability, Solid Waste Management, Resource Conversion or Recycling along with 3 years of related experience.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have extensive knowledge waste reduction services and sustainable solutions as well as Federal, State and Local regulations.
  • This position requires a broad range of administrative and public relations skills including strong human relation abilities, excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • The incumbent must be analytical, capable of professional written and verbal presentation and must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, evaluate complex problems and devise alternative solutions.
  • Project Management experience is desired.
  • Knowledge of Bio Digestion, Gasification or other waste diversion methods is desired.

Compensation: Expected starting salary is $50,000 - $70,000yr based on experience.
