Description

Public Justice, a national public interest law firm battling environmentally-devastating mountaintop removal mining, air pollution, and water pollution nationwide, seeks an experienced Environmental Enforcement Attorney to work in its DC headquarters.

Public Justice is involved in a broader range of high-impact, cutting-edge litigation than any public interest firm in the nation. Our lawsuits fight for consumer and victims' rights, the environment, civil rights and civil liberties, public health and safety, workers' rights, government and corporate accountability, and the protection of the poor and powerless. Our Access to Justice Campaign keeps the courthouse doors open for all - battling federal preemption, class action bans and abuses, unfair mandatory arbitration, unnecessary court secrecy, and other efforts to deprive people of their day in court.

Public Justice's Environmental Enforcement Project (EEP) uses citizen suits and other litigation to force compliance with the environmental laws and make polluters pay. We are leading the litigation battle against mountaintop removal coal mining and have won the largest Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act settlements in several states. The Environmental Enforcement Attorney will work under the EEP's Director and with Public Justice's cooperating counsel to develop and prosecute cases.

Position Overview:

The attorney will be responsible for developing innovative litigation strategies, networking with clients and environmental groups, and prosecuting citizen suits and other litigation under the nation's environmental laws.

Qualifications:

  • Superb analytical, research, writing, and speaking skills
  • At least 3 years of environmental litigation experience
  • Technical background in a relevant discipline (e.g., engineering, science)
  • Self-motivation and optimistic, can-do personality
  • Creativity and strong organizational skills
  • Willingness to travel for several weeks per year
  • Good sense of humor and ability to get along with others
  • Healthy sense of outrage and desire to change the world for the better

Preference given to individuals with demonstrated commitment to the public interest.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits.
