Description

Provide instruction for classes in environmental studies and sciences, adventure-based education, communications, physical and recreational education, and outdoor skills to students in grades 2-8, as well as some adult groups. Facilitate high-ropes course and team challenge course activities, and group initiative activities. Participate in both the day and residential environmental education programs. Enhance the mental, physical, and social development of the students participating in the program. Extensive training provided for both programs. The supervisor is Kevin Moore, Education Director.

Specific Duties Performed

  1. Teach classes in all identified environmental areas, with specialization in about 5 classes.
  2. Facilitate and provide safe instruction for high-ropes and team challenge courses.
  3. Develop exhibits and teaching tools to support the curriculum.
  4. Prepare class material and upgrade knowledge on a continuous basis.
  5. Provide leadership in planning and supervising students in the completion of dining hall duties, flag ceremonies, store, and other duties.
  6. Maintain safe standards of participation for all classes and students.
  7. Set an example for students with a positive attitude, cooperation and motivation towards learning and personal growth.
  8. Work week begins at 8:00 am on Monday and ends at 5:00 pm on Friday and includes day and evening programs, but no overnight supervisory duties.

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Natural Sciences, Education, Parks and Recreation, Social Work, Biological or Earth Sciences, or other related fields. Stellar performance and experience with children in outdoor environments may take the place of some college classes. Individuals must have a commitment to the environment, a strong love of children, an interest in adventure-based or experiential education, and well developed communication skills. Creativity, enthusiasm and a love for hard work in a team atmosphere are also crucial to successful hiring and job completion.

Compensation

Resident; $220 per week, plus room, board and health insurance stipend. $230-250 per week for consecutive additional seasons. Five-day work week with compensation days given for weekend work.

Duration

Fall Season: August 22nd - November 23rd, 2005
Spring Season: February 20th - May 30th, 2006
