Description

This Summer, take your conscience to work Summer Jobs for the Environment.

Campaign to Save the Environment is a project of the Fund for Public Interest Research, a national, non-profit organization.

We run campaigns on behalf some of the worlds most effective environmental groups, such as Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, and the State PIRGs.

Every summer, we run campaigns in dozens of cities across the country to promote the protection of places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Florida Everglades; to stop the rollback of environmental laws like the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act; and to curb Global Warming.

Weve won campaigns to strengthen the Clean Water Act, to raise the miles-per-gallon standard for SUVs, and to protect 60 million acres of national forests. Weve protected Floridas coast from oil drilling and Massachusetts beaches from toxic pollution. Weve persuaded politicians from California to Washington, D.C. to put the interests of the American people above those of the oil, timber, and auto industries.

Duties:
This summer, well be working in 60 cities across the country with some of the most effective environmental groups in the world:

  • Greenpeace is an independent campaigning organization that uses non-violent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and to force solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.
  • The Sierra Club is the nations oldest and largest grassroots environmental group. The Club promotes conservation by influencing public policy at all levels from the White House to Congress to state capitols.
  • The State Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) are the nations most effective public interest advocacy groups, active in 32 states. By combining professional research with grassroots advocacy, the state PIRGs work to protect the environment, fight for consumers rights, promote good government, and win real victories that improve peoples lives.
  • Despite our victories, there are countless environmental struggles yet to be resolved and just as many adversaries yet to be confronted. Many major corporations spend millions of dollars every year attacking our environmental laws and buying access to our members of Congress and state legislatures.
  • We need to focus on concrete solutions and work hard to see them through.

Students this summer will work to challenge the special interests on a range of environmental issues:

  • The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to hundreds of thousands of plant and animal species, several of which are endangered. Big oil companies, like BP-Amoco, are lobbying the president to open the refuge for oil drilling. This would permanently alter the refuges fragile ecosystem, and experts claim it would bring only six months worth of oil
  • Air Pollution is causing a public health crisis in the United States. Asthma attacks are on the rise, premature deaths number in the tens of thousands annually, and global warming is a devastating threat to the future of our planet. Yet many power companies, like Southern Company, are lobbying to roll back the only federal law that protects our air quality the Clean Air Act
  • America's National Forests are home to some of the most striking natural beauty on Earth. They provide a haven for endangered species, as well as the drinking water for nearly 1000 communities nationwide. Sadly, more than half of these forests have been ruined by road building, mining and clear cutting. Last year, the Forest Service released a plan to protect our last pristine forests. But timber companies, like Boise Cascade, have so far lobbied successfully to delay the plan from going into effect. Americans want and deserve a responsive, accountable government, but most elected officials listen more closely to dollars than values, unless they feel the heat from voters.
  • Thats where you come in. Join Students in Action Across the Country. You can stand up for public health, the environment, democracy and basic civil rights. You can go home each night feeling good about your work, and you can earn money doing it.
  • Learn how to fundraise, run a press conference, build coalitions with local groups, and talk face to face with citizens about the problems were facing and the solutions were presenting.
  • Learn how to be a leader. Learn how to motivate and mobilize a group of activists around important campaigns.
  • Become and Expert on the issues.Youll learn from the nations top public interest advocates, grassroots organizers, and environmental issue experts.
