The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew Cree) Government & Industry Relations (GIR) is currently accepting applications for the position of Environmental Affairs Coordinator. The GIR is seeking a motivated individual in the environmental field whom has experience working with Aboriginal communities and organizations. This is a great opportunity to provide creativity, expertise and support for a First Nation.
The Mikisew Cree represents the largest First Nation in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and has demonstrated strong support for and commitment to sustainable environmental management on its traditional lands.
Position Overview:
You will be responsible for providing technical support to identify and address the Mikisew Cree's key environmental issues. You will have the opportunity to apply technical knowledge and organizational skills to manage environmental projects and significantly contribute to the performance of the GIR. As the Environmental Affairs Coordinator, you will report to the GIR Director and will serve as a key member of the GIR staff.
The GIR is based in Fort McMurray and offers a very attractive compensation and benefits package. The position will require the ability to multi task, manage staff, and adapt in a fast paced environment and complete work with minimal supervision. An advanced degree in environmental science or related subject areas is strongly desired.
Term of Position: 6 months probationary period with possibility of permanent employment based on performance.
Responsibilities:
The duties of the Environmental Affairs Coordinator include, but are not limited to the following:
- Manage third party consultants in the review of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA's)
- Review key documents including, Terms of Reference (TOR), Scopes of Work (SOWs), Request for Proposals (RFPs), monitoring reports and plans, industry amendments and project approvals;
- Coordinate the Mikisew Cree's participation in public hearings by developing and reviewing written submission, preparing the technical panel, providing testimony, when required, attending meeting and preparing correspondence;
- Communicate and advise the Mikisew Cree Leadership and community on environmental issues in the region;
- Conduct research on environmental issues pertinent to the Mikisew Cree;
- Liaise and coordinate with stakeholders and First Nations, including other GIRs, industry representatives and government personnel;
- Assist in the negotiation, review and monitoring of environmental agreements and mitigation strategies to assess status for implementation;
- Represent the Mikisew GIR on relevant regional multi stakeholder and multi First Nation committees;
- Prepare information documents and presentations for high level and community meetings;
- Implement protocols within the community for the access and protection of traditional environmental knowledge;
- Assist in the development of the GIR work plans;
- Assist with the development of communication strategies and activities such as new bulletins, tours, community and Elders meetings;
- Perform administrative duties as required.
Qualifications:
- B Sc. In environmental sciences or related subject areas;
- Knowledge of Aboriginal or Indigenous Peoples' environmental concerns
- Possess strong research, analysis and report writing skills
- Possess strong organizational and project coordination skills
- Working knowledge of word processing programs (MS Office and Adobe products);
- Ability to work both independently and as a team player
- Ability to multi task, adapt in a flexible and fast paced environment
- Willingness to travel;
- Knowledge of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo region
