The Massachusetts Public Interest Group (MASSPIRG) is the state's leading
advocate for the public interest. With over 50,000 citizen members and 25
college chapters, a staff of public policy experts, attorneys, organizers,
and issue advocates, and a national office in Washington, DC, MASSPIRG has
been protecting the environment, fighting for consumers, and making
government and business more accountable to the public since 1972.
Duties:
The MASSPIRG Environmental Advocate will address several critical
environmental issues in the state, including: reducing the use of pesticides
and toxic substances, advocating for stricter solid waste management and
increased recycling programs, promoting our clean water platform, and
preserving our open space.
With the use of some of the worst toxics on the
rise, landfills reaching maximum capacity, water quality the second worst in
the country, and open space being developed at a rate of 44 acres a day,
protecting the environment in MA is a huge and important challenge that
MASSPIRG's Environmental Advocate will spearhead.
The responsibilities
include serving as:
- Issue Expert: Research environmental and health issues, identify problems,
work with other experts, academics, and advocates to craft public policy
solutions. - Advocate: Bring problems/solutions to the attention of decision-makers;
including state legislators, the Executive branch, agency staff, and local
officials, through individual meetings, lobbying, testifying, and otherwise
pushing for the adoption of our platform. - Campaign strategist: Build political support for our agenda through planning
the tactics and means to winning our campaigns, including
coalition-building, message strategy, grassroots outreach, VIP endorsements,
and media publicity. - Fundraiser: Increase resources for the program through foundation work;
including grant-writing and relationship-building with foundation staff and
principals, cultivating large donors, and assisting with other
organizational fundraising efforts. - Media liaison: Serve as spokesperson for the campaigns and programs through
media events, releases, editorial board meetings, and other outreach.
Qualifications:
- Qualified applicants have a strong commitment to public interest issues,
excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, the ability to debate and
speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the work. - Candidates for this position should have three to eight years of relevant
professional experience, post college. - Relevant experience includes (but is
not limited to) working in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or
government settings. - Advanced degrees, including a JD or masters in related
fields, may count toward a candidate's professional experience. - If you have

Terms:
Salary for this position is commensurate with the amount of relevant
professional experience that a candidate has: salary could range from
$25,000 to $33,000.
