The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's roads, bridges and tunnels.
Position Overview:
Seeking customer service oriented individual to provide district/division with leadership and environmental engineering guidance. You will serve as the Aquatic Ecology expert, assessing potential environmental impacts on highway and VDOT facility construction, operations, and maintenance projects in the area of: inter-disciplinary teams producing water quality reports and permit determinations; preparing permit applications; monitoring construction project for permit compliance; and performing stream classification, restoration, wetland determinations, delineations, and compensatory mitigation planning, design and monitoring.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing state/federal laws and regulations governing water quality permits and natural resources; identifying, delineating and classifying streams and wetlands; and obtaining state/federal water quality permits. Ability to review site plans and construction documents; communicate both orally and in writing; write, compile and edit technical water quality reports; prepare/deliver presentations regarding construction projects with environmental impacts to VDOT personnel and environmental agencies; provide technical guidance to all levels of employees and management; and operate personal computers (MS Office preferred).
Skill in assessing construction impacts on streams, wetlands, fish, plant and wildlife resources, and in identifying opportunities for avoidance, minimization and mitigation. Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skill. Graduation from an accredited college/university with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in one of the following areas or related disciplines: biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental/soil science, geology, aquatic ecology, civil/chemical engineering, environmental engineering/law, hydrology, wetland ecology, forestry; or training and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work.
Preferred Qualifications:
Department of Conservation and Recreation Erosion and Sediment Certification considered a plus.
