Positions are in the ENERGY STAR Products Branch, in the Climate Protection Partnership Division of the USEPA.  The ENERGY STAR Products Branch implements the Agency's goals to encourage the design, manufacture and sale of products that meet its guidelines for energy efficiency.  The Products Branch is responsible for writing and revising ENERGY STAR efficiency specifications for products, working with product manufacturers and retailers to market ENERGY STAR qualified products and educating consumers, as well as institutional purchasers, about the value of ENERGY STAR.   

Position Overview: 

One position involves managing the ENERGY STAR product specifications development process for a variety of residential and commercial products, with an emphasis on consumer electronic and IT products.  Another position centers around marketing activities for ENERGY STAR qualified commercial kitchen products. 

Responsibilities: 

Product Specification Development: 

The major responsibilities of the product specification development position include:

  1. managing the working relationships with a wide variety of domestic and international manufacturers and other stakeholders that have an interest in the development of the ENERGY STAR specifications.
  2. Reviewing and interpreting information and data used in the development of ENERGY STAR product test procedures, performance specifications and reporting requirements.  Steps in this process include: analyzing energy consumption and technology trends and developments across business environments and gathering product and market sales data used in the quantification of national energy savings estimates.
  3. Developing and implementing strategic plans for the timely completion of appropriate product test procedures and specifications to ensure program continuity and consistency with program principles.

Sales & Marketing: 

The job responsibilities of the sales and marketing position include working with manufacturers commercial kitchen products to manufacturer and market energy efficient models, working with national restaurant and fast food chains to purchase efficient food service products and working with regional energy efficiency program sponsors to promote ENERGY STAR qualified commercial kitchen products to their customers.

Major Duties:   The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge in some or all of the following:

  • Managing multiple stakeholder processes that successfully ensure stakeholder input is given serious consideration and the Agency's decision process is transparent.
  • Reviewing and interpreting technical and/or market data, particularly as it relates to consumer electronics or IT equipment, to understand and quantify opportunities to improve the efficiency of products.  
  • The commercial food service product sectors, participating manufacturers, markets and product distribution channels.
  • The benefits of energy efficiency as a means to improve the value of products for consumers and to mitigate the effects of air pollution and climate change.
  • Developing and presenting presentations to inform varied stakeholders.
  • Contract management (experience as a COR/WAM).

Qualifications: 

This position requires a graduate degree or equivalent experience in public policy, environmental science/management, engineering, marketing and/or business administration. Successful candidates will thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment and be able to manage multiple projects.  The position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented with a diverse set of skills and a dynamic personality.
