Crown Point Ecology Center is green space that matters - a biologically diverse living laboratory that serves to demonstrate practical applications of ecology. The 115-acre Crown Point farmland in Bath, Ohio is a regional model for sustainable agriculture and environmental education. We believe that ecological land stewardship encourages structural and social change through local food production, positive impacts on the environment, health of our citizens, and local economic development.

Position Overview:

The Education Coordinator is a year-round, full time staff member of Crown Point Ecology Center (CPEC). The Education Coordinator collaborates with the education committee and staff members in areas of curriculum development. He/she implements all children's summer programming, and coordinates CPEC education programming generally.

Responsibilities:

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Articulates and models the Crown Point mission and guiding principles of community, spirituality, sustainability and justice to students, parents, visitors and the general public:

  • Introduces all guests and students to the mission of Crown Point and invites their involvement in it through participation in programming.
  • Creates programming that models the core values of Crown Point.

Coordinates all facets of education programming:

  • Coordinates all activities guided by the curriculum.
  • Coordinates preparation of children's garden and herb garden.
  • Orders and organizes all materials needed for activities.
  • Creates schedules for participants and others.
  • Coordinates marketing of all educational programs.
  • Interfaces with community stakeholders and partners to develop and strengthen collaborations such as Farm to School, School Gardens and other programs.
  • Develops and implements educational content of adult/family programs.
  • Develops and monitors budget for all educational programs, assists with grant writing.

Writes and teaches integrated scope and sequence curriculum for education programs:

  • Writes curriculum and teaches all facets of programs.
  • Creates an evaluation tool to be used with students and parents to evaluate program successes and opportunities for improvement.
  • Cleans and puts away all equipment and tools in designated areas.
  • Trains and supervises volunteers and seasonal staff.
  • Orients self and others to the various ecosystems and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate record-keeping of attendees address/phones numbers, etc. and health forms or other permissions relative to picture-taking.
  • Maintains communication with office staff at all times via cell phones in case of emergency or parental directives.
  • Ensures the safety of self and all participants at all times.

Web Site Management:

  • Coordinates updated material for website (on going basis)
  • Inputs changes to website and monitors for timely and accurate presentation

Volunteer Coordination:

  • Collaborates with the volunteer Coordinator to manage the volunteer databases.
  • Recruit, orient, schedule, and monitor success of volunteers for Taste of Earth
  • Supervises service learning high school and/or college volunteers

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree required. M. Ed. in Environmental Education or related field preferred. Ohio teaching certificate for elementary education strongly preferred.
  • Experience
  • 3 to 4 years of teaching experience required. Teaching experience in science, environmental education preferred.
  • Proficiency with hand-tools preferred.
  • Experience with small farm equipment and machinery helpful.
  • Experience with organic methods preferred.
  • Familiarity with various land-based curriculum projects such as Project Wet, Project Wild, Project Learning Tree and Project Food, Land & People preferred.
  • Experience creating developmentally appropriate curriculum for ecology and agriculture-based programs for multi-age youth.

Skills:

  • Maintains a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrates skill with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. Publisher, Front Page preferred.
  • Certified in CPR.
  • Trained in First Aid and water safety.
  • Writes clearly.
  • Communicates well with various age levels.
  • Helps create a community-focused environment that supports the Crown Point mission and its guiding principles.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage various programs and initiatives throughout the seasonal cycles.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Flexible with changing weather conditions and alternative plans.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, lift at least 25 pounds unassisted, and push/pull equipment.
  • Comfort with the risks associated with outdoor activities.
  • Open to fingerprinting and a criminal background check according to Crown Point policies.

Time Commitment: 40 hours per week, with June-August (10 weeks) seasonally heavy load for SFSC. Otherwise flexible hours, can work at home if necessary.
