~ NICHES protects, restores and sustains Northern Indiana's ecosystems by providing habitat for native species and offering natural places for the education, appreciation and enjoyment of current and future generations. ~

Position Overview 

The Education and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of education programs and outreach under the direction of the Executive Director.

The Coordinator leads the implementation of NICHES education and outreach programs adhering to high professional standards. Outreach and education performed by the Coordinator is designed to build support for land conservation and assemble a cadre of environmental advocates for generations to come.

Specifically, the Coordinator assists the Executive Director in developing and leading education and membership programs for adults and children, while maintaining contact with the public through press releases, media outlets, and NICHES Land Trust activities.

The Education and Outreach Coordinator is a year-round, full-time, paid position. Tentative start date is July 27, 2015. This position is exempt and is appointed by and reports to the Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities  

The responsibilities of the Education and Outreach Coordinator include, but are not limited to the following: 

Education and Outreach: 

  • Develop, assist, and support educational programs and membership activities, such as walks on preserves, boating on local streams and presentations indoors.
  • Coordinate community outreach with staff and board to obtain publicity whenever possible and appropriate.
  • Support the Executive Director in community relation activities and take the lead in community events that can support understanding of NICHES Land Trust's work.
  • Recruit, supervise and coordinate a cadre of volunteers to help lead, facilitate, and promote activities on NICHES' properties.
  • Ensure NICHES websites and social media outlets are updated regularly.
  • Seek professional development opportunities when relevant and appropriate funding is available. 

Administration Support: 

  • Lead the pursuit of the underwriting to support NICHES Land Trust Education & Outreach Program.
  • Develop and maintain contact with other community based organizations to share resources and collaborate on programs wherever possible. 

Stewardship Support: 

  • Assist the organizational controlled burning program.
  • Coordinate regular workdays at Clegg Memorial Garden. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Commitment to NICHES Land Trust mission, principles, values and longevity
  • Creative individual willing to contribute ideas to the organization
  • Enthusiastic, inspiring personality who enjoys working with people; willingness to collaborate as a team with a wide variety of audiences, including staff, board, volunteers and interns
  • Effective public speaking skills; ability to communicate in an outdoor setting
  • Proficient writing and editing skills; ability to clearly convey information to the general public
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask, adapt to change and interruptions, work independently and self-manage, and to prioritize effectively for maximum efficiency
  • Excellent computer skills; must be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
  • Database management, social media experience preferred. Graphic design background a plus
  • Background in environmental education
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and overnight camping, per events schedule
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record are required
  • Safe boating skills on class I+ waters
  • Leave no trace camping skills preferred
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Personal vehicle needed with mileage reimbursement on state guidelines 

Working Conditions 

The Education and Outreach Coordinator will work indoors at the NICHES Land Trust office and outdoors during events and programs. Activities will occur on varied terrain and in variable weather conditions on land and over water. Knowledge of the native flora and fauna, and boating experience is a plus. 

Compensation: Starting salary $32,000-35,000 depending on experience, paid vacation/ holiday/ sick leave with additional health and retirement benefits.
