At Good Oak Ecological Services our mission is to improve the environment for the benefit of people and the natural community.  Through our work we hope to prevent future extinctions of our wild plants and animals and perhaps help re-establish some that have been lost. We have been strongly influenced by Aldo Leopold and his "Land Ethic".  We felt that referencing this important conservation literature was appropriate.  We strive to live up to his ideals and work for positive change. 

Position Overview:  

The Ecological Restoration Manager is responsible for supervising Good Oak's ecological restoration projects. Specific activities include meeting with clients and educating them about the ecological health of their property, formulating feasible adaptive management plans, developing estimates and proposals, leading the crew conducting field work, and invoicing completed projects.

Our restoration work includes brush removal, prescribed burning, mechanical and chemical weed control, prairie establishment, shoreline and slope restoration, erosion control and more. Additional responsibilities will include assisting with sustainable landscaping projects, equipment maintenance, marketing projects and other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

Necessary Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age with a valid driver's license.
  • Bachelors Degree in Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, or similar.
  • At least 3 years of professional or volunteer experience in the field of natural areas management.
  • Experience operating and maintaining chain saws, brushcutters, herbicide spray equipment, mowers, and other power tools.
  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds, work on one’s feet for several hours and willingness to work in harsh weather and difficult conditions.
  • Experience conducting prescribed burns and completion of NWCG S130/190 courses.
  • Able to identify many native and exotic plants found in midwestern prairies, woodland and wetlands.
  • Experience managing invasive species common to the midwest.
  • Experience working with herbicides and a Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicators License or willingness and ability to attain such a license.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with computers and productivity software.

Additional Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Master's Degree in related field.
  • Experience operating vehicles towing a trailer, tractors, skid-loaders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience with erosion control and shoreline stabilization techniques.
  • Advanced mechanical skills; small engine repair, computer hardware, etc.
  • Experience operating GPS devices and working with GIS software.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Experience in sales or business management.


Compensation: Starting at $16-20/hour, with compensation to increase with time for a well performing candidate. This is a full-time hourly position. No additional benefits are available at this time.
