Description
The National Council of Churches is comprised of 35 member denominations including the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church USA, Episcopal Church, and numerous historic Black Church and Orthodox communions. The Council serves as both a convener and voice for a faith constituency of almost 50 million people and 100,000 congregations across the United States. The Council's environmental program has built a denominational and congregational base over a span of nearly 25 years and has helped the faith-based environmental movement grow in voice, vision, and capacity. The program identifies issues and spreads worship and mission materials that carry the message of protecting God's creation.
Position Description
The eco-justice program specialist, a grant-funded position, will work with the Director of Eco-Justice Programs to perform outreach to a variety of faith groups in an effort to recruit and engage people of faith on environmental issues. The program specialist will also assist with implementing environmental initiatives with congregations, member communions and faith groups.
Responsibilities:
* Help implement appropriate outreach and communication strategies to recruit and engage people of faith on environmental issues.
* Carry out grassroots organizing, media, advocacy and religious education work and build a strong network of faith-based participants.
* Research environmental resources and programs.
* Assist with implementation of training and education events and presentations.
* Present faith and environmental issue information at meetings and conferences.
* Assist with database maintenance.
* Assist the Director of Eco-Justice Programs as required.
* Some travel is required.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree. At least 1-2 years in experience in environmental education/outreach or communication/public relations.
* Knowledge of environmental issues.
* Experience with e-advocacy and web-based communication. Distant organizing or e-advocacy skills a plus.
* Strong computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet & database, electronic communication). Knowledge of html a plus.
* Strong written and oral communication skills.
* Organized, self-directed, patient, and energetic with a sense of humor.
* Ability and desire to work with the religious community on environmental issues.
This position is financially supported by specified contributions from our communions, individual donations and foundation grants. No general funds are allocated to this position. If such funds are not available the position is terminated.
Location: The Program Specialist will work out of the Washington, DC, office of the NCC. The NCC does not reimburse relocation expenses. The specialist will report directly to the NCC Director of Eco-Justice Programs
