Description

Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) is a 33 year-old nonprofit land conservation organization that protects farm and ranch land in Marin County, California by acquiring agricultural conservation easements in voluntary transactions with private landowners. As of June 2013, MALT holds 72 easements on nearly 46,000 acres. MALT has a 16-person professional staff. The office is located in Point Reyes Station, CA.

Position Overview:

The Easement Project Manager is a full time non-exempt position that has responsibilities in all aspects of MALT's conservation easement program. Under the supervision of and in partnership with the Easement Program Director, the Easement Project Manager is responsible for implementing all phases of agricultural easement acquisitions to further MALT's mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate MALT's evaluation of potential easement acquisition opportunities with the Stewardship Department; help to prioritize those opportunities.
  • Track and document the status of easement acquisition projects using ConservationTrack, MALT's cloud-based project and stewardship management system.
  • Assist in the completion of project due diligence.
  • Hire and manage consultants with a variety of expertise, such as appraisers, resource conservation professionals, and surveyors.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of, and personally prepare and review acquisition documents (e.g., purchase agreements, agricultural conservation easements, appraisals, title documents, escrow instructions).
  • Assist in the solicitation and management of public agency grants for easement acquisitions. 
  • Provide support to the Development Department as needed for project fundraising efforts, such as donor tours and written project materials.
  • Assist with preparation of agricultural management plans and other management plans necessary to protect the agricultural and natural resources of easement-protected properties.
  • Assist with preparation and review of baseline conditions reports for proposed easement properties.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum three years of experience in conservation land acquisitions, real estate and land use laws and regulations.
  • College degree required, graduate or law degree strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently sometimes with minimal initial direction.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with diverse groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Experience with negotiation and relationship building.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly self-motivated.
  • Computer literate.
  • Outstanding planning and analytical skills.
  • Experience with project budgets and accounting.
  • Familiarity with local geographic area.
  • Knowledge of current tax and conservation laws.
  • Knowledge of natural resources.
  • Must be able to work outdoors, often in areas of rough terrain.
  • Must have experience or feel very comfortable driving an off-road vehicle (standard transmission) on steep and rugged terrain.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license required with acceptable DMV record, current registration, and automobile liability insurance.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work.
