Research Reports to: Chief Science Officer (CSO)
Earthwatch Institute is an international, non-profit organization that engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. The Director of Research has primary responsibility for recruitment, development and oversight of a portfolio of research projects that meet the needs of Earthwatch Institute.
Responsibilities include development and implementation of an international research strategy for Earthwatch, oversight and implementation of outreach to the scientific community to generate projects to support the research strategy, as well as oversight and implementation of reporting and communications regarding the research program.
The Director will help ensure and build the scientific credibility of the organization, act as a spokesperson for Earthwatch, leading and participating in conference sessions, workshops, events and lecture series. The Director is expected to develop and oversee analyses and external reporting efforts on the contributions of Earthwatch to environmental sustainability. Travel to conferences and specific field sites will be required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
I. Manage Program Directors and Program Assistant to recruit research projects
II. Work as a team with the Director of Field Management
III. Oversee and monitor research portfolio analysis
IV. Develop an effective outreach program to recruit new proposals in a timely manner
V. Responsible for internal and external review process for new and 4th year proposals
VI. Oversee evaluation and reporting on the research program
VII. Develop and manage program initiatives and partnerships
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
* Qualifications in field-based, ecological, social and/or conservation sciences. Ph.D. or equivalent degree required
* Significant field experience in international programs
* Prior management experience required
* Ability to manage peer relations and work effectively as part of team efforts
* Excellent organizational skills
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to produce financial and tracking reports for planning and reporting purposes
* Strong leadership skills
