Position Overview

The Director of Operations is responsible for all aspects of Company and store operations. This includes the proper execution and evaluation to ensure maximum sales, effective cost control, and efficient utilization of labor. The Director of Operations works to procure vendors and product relationships that will positively impact the Company’s growth and sales trends.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

Director of Operations will supervise the Store Managers for each of the Food Matters Markets’ locations and report to the CEO and Board of Directors on selected performance metrics and the profitability for each store and the Company as a whole, including:

  • Developing and implementing annual, period, and weekly sales goals and budgeted costs for each store and ensuring each Store Manager is contributing to the development of and held accountable for the budgeted and actual Profit & Loss (P&L) of each store.
  • Setting parameters for and supervising product pricing decisions and discount and promotion activities in support of meeting company sales goals and gross margin goals.
  • Setting parameters for and supervising product purchasing decisions in coordination with the Company’s market research, sales strategy, product selection, and pricing.
  • Closely managing Inventory, Turnover, and Spoilage, and training store and category managers and holding them accountable for meeting inventory management and gross margin goals.
  • Reviewing and approving each Store Manager’s weekly projected labor requirements based on projected sales and holding them accountable for consistently achieving budgeted payroll costs as a percentage of sales.
  • Managing and Coordinating operations with the CEO, Controller, and all corporate level staff for finance, HR, and IT functions including accounting, cash management, invoicing, payroll, internal/external reporting, and compliance.
  • Reporting to the CEO and Board of Directors on a regular basis on selected operational metrics and the profitability and performance of each store and the Company compared to budget for each period and year.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Director of Operations will be responsible for the overall training and development of the store management teams at each store location including:

  • Directly supervising all Store Managers and holding them responsible for the day-to-day store operations, merchandising and appearance, and overall conditions at each store location.
  • Developing and sustaining a high level of product knowledge and product preparation among all store managers and category managers at each store location.
  • Providing strong, positive, and pro-active leadership to his/her team while providing direction, feedback, and holding them accountable for performance and results.
  • Maintaining a culture committed to the highest level of customer service at all times throughout all levels of the Company.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Familiarity with the ECRS Perpetual Inventory System and a general practical knowledge of payroll and financial accounting and budgetary reporting is strongly desired.
  • Must exhibit advanced attention to detail with the capability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Must have the capacity to take initiative when problems arise and efficiently plan for and ability to execute solutions. The ability to multitask and have excellent organizational skills is essential.
  • Ability to train, coach, mentor, and team build. Must be able to lead, support and contribute to team goals, and demonstrate the ability to improve staff performance through motivation, training and setting clear expectations. Must possess ability to engage and inspire team and create a culture of teamwork and empowerment.
  • Ability to adapt to the ever-changing high volume detail oriented retail environment and have the flexibility to adapt in a variety of situations and the skills necessary for dealing cross functionally with peers and senior management.

Education, Credentials, Certification, and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from 4-year college or university; or 1-to-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in retail sales management in the grocery store business and must be familiar with Health Department guidelines and regulations as they pertain to a grocery retail environment.
  • Experience with supervision of managers in remote locations and travel between store locations. Ability to work varied hours/days as the retail grocery business dictates.
