Description

Esalen Institute, the pioneering educational organization dedicated to personal and social transformation, is now hiring for the position of Director of Marketing. This position reports directly to the CEO, and works closely with the executive team and departments to develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy and program for Esalen.

This position will be based at the Esalen campus in Big Sur, California, or may be based in the Monterey or Santa Cruz area, with at least half of each working week spent on site at Esalen.

Responsibilities

  • Branding - profiling and projecting a consistent image of Esalen based on its values, vision and mission; crafting and delivering consistent messages regarding Esalen as a whole.  
  • Integrated Marketing Strategy - identification of all market segments of Esalen, development of marketing strategy and best media to reach each segment of our target audience, design and delivery of most effective messages for each of the segments.  
  • Alliances - identification of allied organizations in each market segment and development of strategic alliances for marketing and other programs.  
  • Design - development of consistent communication content, look, and "feel" consistent with mission profiling - website, catalogue, press releases, logo, tagline, letter and other stationery heading, direct mail and e-mail campaigns, donation campaigns, etc.  
  • Public relations - identification and development of opportunities and occasions for press releases and special functions to promote the awareness of Esalen in the general public as well as special audiences relating to many segments of the Esalen market.  
  • "Relationship marketing" - creation of comprehensive "customer relationship marketing" program based on student profile and cultivation of lifelong partnership in personal and spiritual growth and social empowerment; coordination with other departments of Esalen in implementing relationship marketing program.  
  • Website - design and maintenance of the website, in coordination with the IT department and with use of outside consultants where needed.  
  • Database - ongoing update, development, maintenance, and analyses of the customer database to ensure its integrity, usefulness, recency, and continual expansion.  
  • Cultivation of new and returning customers - development of new prospects for our current workshops and for new kinds of workshops; cultivation of existing customer base.  
  • Capacity goal - design and implementation of direct mail and e-mail campaigns to fill all seminars to 95% capacity.  
  • Development/fundraising - close coordination with Development department in recruitment and cultivation of donors - especially in communications, donor prospecting and donor relationship building.

Qualities, Skills and Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience and proven success in a senior direct marketing function grounded in database technology, of which at least 5 years in e-marketing, especially e-mail marketing.  
  • Deep understanding of conventional and Internet direct marketing concepts, practices and programs.  
  • Deep understanding of how to build life-long customer relationships based on one-on-one marketing.  
  • Proven ability to create marketing and campaign strategy.  
  • Proven ability to coordinate organization-wide programs across multiple departments.  
  • Creative ability, flexibility.  
  • Strong written, spoken, and computer communication skills.  
  • Relationship builder and team player.  
  • MBA or equivalent marketing degree desirable.  
  • Position based in Big Sur, California, or 50% in Big Sur and 50% in Carmel, or Monterey, or Santa Cruz.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to maneuver on uneven ground, sit for long periods of time, occasionally carry and lift up to 15 pounds, and be able perform daily repetitive hand motions as it pertains to computer mouse and keyboard.

Compensation

Compensation is $72,000+ per year based on experience, plus housing or a housing allowance. Full health benefits, FSA and annual vacation are provided.
