Mohonk Preserve is a dynamic organization with responsibility for managing and protecting 8,000 acres of the northern Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County, NY. 

The Preserve has four integrated programs - Conservation Science, Education, Land Stewardship, and Land Protection, and is a regional model for large-scale conservation planning which safeguards the integrity of our natural surroundings while providing for public recreation and education. 

We have an annual budget of $3 million, 35 year-round staff and over 350 volunteers.  We also have a diverse support base of nearly 13,000 individual members and supporters.  Our Visitor Center is an award-winning green design building surrounded by nature trails and is a great work environment!

Position Overview:

We have a fast paced, results-driven Development department, which includes Major Gifts, Individual and Planned Giving, Membership Services, Special Events, and Volunteers. 

We are seeking a Director of Development with a collaborative management style and a minimum of 5 years' experience in non-profit fundraising and management with a record of quantifiable success in soliciting and securing major gifts, inspiring staff and colleagues, managing a large portfolio of prospects, and achieving aggressive fundraising goals.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a multi-faceted fundraising & membership program that includes major gifts, capital campaign, marketing, special events, annual and planned giving, volunteer programs and direct mail. 

The Director of Development serves as the overall strategist for the Development program and provides supervision and oversight for the department. He/she represents and promotes the Preserve's mission & brand by providing excellent donor stewardship, attending select public programs, and interacting with members, volunteers and supporters.

The ideal candidate:

  • is a people person with strong supervisory experience and ability to manage & motivate staff;
  • has a proven track record of closing gifts of $5,000 and up;
  • has experience working with volunteers, Board members and the public;
  • has exemplary written & oral communication skills;
  • has knowledge of marketing strategies; and
  • possesses strong planning & time management skills and is successful meeting deadlines.

Qualifications:  

  • The position requires a Bachelor's degree;
  • strong supervisory skills;
  • superior computer skills including Microsoft Office and strong database experience;
  • Raiser's Edge experience strongly preferred;
  • ability to manage multiple projects and work independently in a fast-paced environment;
  • be available for frequent weekend & evening work; and
  • possess a driver's license.

Compensation: Excellent work environment with benefits including health, vision, dental, life, disability insurance, retirement plan, and access privileges to the lands of the Preserve and the Mohonk Mountain House resort.  Salary: $60s/year based on experience.
