Director of Architecture

Position Overview  

NYC Parks is seeking candidates for the postion of Director of Architecture. Reporting to the Chief of Architecture and Engineering, this position manages the Capital Project Division's Architecture Design Unit of 30-40 people. 

Major Responsibilities 

• Manage agency filing representatives (expediters) to ensure Department of Buildings (DOB) and other required regulatory approvals are in place at the right time.
• Working with various Agency stakeholders, establish and implement design standards for DPR facilities and equipment.
• Provide leadership for the in-house architectural design program; establish and improve upon systems for the efficient production of architectural work.
• Effectively leverage available architectural consultants to supplement in-house staff resources and to perform specialized work.
• Determine and prioritize work assignments to achieve annual project completion goals.
• Ensure all architectural designs result in efficiently constructed and maintainable buildings.
• As directed, serve as architect of record on documents prepared by capital staff for DOB filing.
• Support and collaborate with other capital design and construction units, such as landscape architecture staff, engineering staff and construction management staff.
• Prepare and present exhibits and reports. Represent Parks at external meetings and reviews.
• Collaborate with the Personnel Department to develop staff training for professional development, continuing education seminars, LEED certification and licensure. 

Qualifications 

Requirements: 

• A valid New York State Registration as an Architect is required. 
• In addition, candidates must have 6 years of full-time paid experience in architectural work.
• The position also requires at least 2 years of which shall have been as an administrative architect.
• This position is exempt from NYC residency requirements. 

Preferred Skills & Qualifications: 

• Over 5 years of experience supervising a staff of 15 or more.
• Demonstrated ability to manage 30 or more projects simultaneously.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS and project tracking software a plus.
• Knowledge of the following specialized disciplines: sustainable/"green" design, historic preservation/conservation, ADA/Universal design concepts, urban design and/or public art.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• A driver license valid in New York State. 

Compensation: Salary is $100,000 - $115,000 plus excellent benefits.
