Duties:
The Director, European Activities, based in Paris, oversees BSRs relationship with its Europe-based member companies and is the individual responsible and accountable for leading and expanding the organizations activities in Europe.

Specifically, the Director is responsible for maintaining relationships with BSRs Europe-based member companies; recruiting additional companies into BSRs membership; ensuring the provision of consulting services to companies based in Europe; engaging with other CSR organizations and stakeholder groups active in Europe, and communicating European perspectives and developments related to CSR to BSR staff elsewhere.

The Director reports to the Senior Vice President, CSR Services, and works closely with the other team leaders in the CSR Services group.

The Director, European Activities also will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for BSRs European activities.

  • Oversight and management of relationships with BSRs member companies headquartered in Europe.
  • Development of consulting projects with these companies.
  • Provision and oversight of high quality CSR consulting services to these companies.
  • Recruitment of new European-based companies into BSRs membership, with a focus on companies in the consumer products, food/agriculture, energy/extractives, transportation, pharmaceuticals, information and communication technology, and financial services sectors.
  • Maintaining regular dialogue with other CSR organizations and influential stakeholder groups and public entities based in and active in Europe.
  • Representation of BSR with the board of directors and with external audiences
  • Regular communication to other BSR staff of European perspectives and developments relating to CSR.
  • Identification of funding opportunities for projects consistent with BSRs strategy from public sector, multilateral and foundation sources.
  • Budget, revenue and expenditure responsibility and accountability for European activities
  • Based on organizational plans, hiring, developing, mentoring and managing European-based staff
  • Coordination with San Francisco-based staff, including close partnership with BSRs CSR Services Group, and collaboration with the leaders of BSRs Finance, HR and IT functions
  • Participation in BSRs organizational planning, policies and operations, with a focus on the CSR Services Group.

Other responsibilities as time permits to advance the mission, goals and strategies of BSR

Qualifications:

  • A University degree in business or a related subject, with a strong preference for a post-graduate degree in business or other relevant field.
  • Ten or more years of experience working in or with large, Europe-based companies, with direct responsibility for policies linked to corporate social responsibility.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of the field of corporate social responsibility, including European and other perspectives on corporate social responsibility, and business operations in diverse, global environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of two or more of the following industry sectors: consumer products, food/agriculture, energy/extractives, transportation, pharmaceuticals, information and communication technology, and financial services.
  • Expertise in two or more of the following CSR issues: human rights/social inclusion, environment, global development, and accountability and transparency.
  • Demonstrated leadership and vision and an entrepreneurial spirit used to grow a business or business function, with business development experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong planning, project management and people management skills
  • Outstanding writing, editing and public speaking skills.
  • Fluent written and verbal skills in English, and at least one of the following languages, French, German or Spanish, with a preference for French.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Budget development and oversight experience.
  • A collaborative management style.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with skill, knowledge and experience level and the constraints of a non-profit business organization.

All BSR employees are also eligible for an annual salary adjustment and a modest annual bonus based on individual and team performance and the organizations overall financial results.
