Position Overview:

This position is responsible for the leadership and human capital management of the Advanced Energy and Transportation Technologies business located in North Carolina. This role strategically manages existing business and is responsible for business growth using current and new capabilities. It provides both technical and administrative leadership associated with revenue generation and project management.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishes department strategy and objectives that support revenue generation. Responsible for the effective operation of department activities that have an impact on the organization.
  • Establishes and executes the overall business development strategy for the department.
  • Directs technical research and development programs consisting of multiple related projects involving collaborations with other groups both within and outside of the Institute.
  • Directs internal IR&D programs leading to revenue generating Intellectual Property development
  • Creates the work culture that builds trust, values teamwork and holds people accountable.
  • Implement and champion corporate initiatives (e.g., Human Resources, Quality, Safety, Environmental, Energy)

Position Specific Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Operations business unit leadership team to establish strategic direction and priorities.
  • Ensures open communication and encourages relationship building at all levels.
  • Develop initiatives for growth and productivity capital investments with visibility by partnering with department/business unit/divisional leadership.
  • Primary interface for the department with commercial and government clients to generate cost estimates and proposals, negotiate terms and conditions of contractual relationships.
  • Responsible for customer satisfaction, revenue, profits, and the safe operation of Energy Management initiatives.
  • Oversees the implementation of programs/projects to ensure the triple constrains of time, quality, and cost objectives are met. Will frequently use independent judgment to make decisions and must exercise a high level of confidentiality to disseminate sensitive information.
  • Lead and direct multiple project managers and their project teams in executing major capital programs and direct the activities of engineering service providers.
  • Manages departmental staff to include hiring, training, advancing, appraising, motivating, disciplining, and assuring healthy and safe working conditions of staff members. Implements HR processes and other administrative responsibilities associated with the direct supervision of professional and technical resources of the department.
  • Responsible for budget development and monitoring; ensures the appropriateness of time and materials charges to projects, and manage the integration and timely support provided by these groups to other groups.
  • Retains currency in field of specialization by staying abreast of changes, both internal and external, which affect the operation of the group.

Qualifications:

  • Masters in Environmental or Chemical Engineering. Non Masters with sufficiently demonstrated skills will be considered.
  • 10 + years of directly related experience with a minimum of 2 years managing a professional staff
  • Established contacts within the government and commercial environment and energy fields, including specific contacts within DOE and the EPA
  • Demonstrated track record of developing intellectual property
  • Demonstrated track record of success in developing and executing large government and commercial R&D programs
  • Demonstrated track record of success in launching new growth directions within core business areas
  • Possess expert knowledge and is a recognized authority within the field of environmental and energy programs.
  • Must possess ability to interact and communicate effectively with staff members, other Institute personnel, clients, and customers
  • Project management experience practices; ability to and prior experience with resource allocation.
  • Knowledge of business acumen and understand and apply cost and financial accounting concepts.
  • Travel is required 10% - 50% of the time.

Work Environment & Conditions:

  • This position involves the ability to work both in an office and technical laboratory environment. Entry to laboratory or workspace area will require use of PPE including safety glasses and safety shoes and possibly a respirator.
