Description

The Point Reyes National Seashore is located approximately 30 miles (50 km) north of San Francisco along the west coast of California. It is home to a wide range of plants and animals, dramatic beaches and cliffs, wooded trails, tranquil bays and a thriving local community.

Position Overview:

The position reports to the Executive Director who will work closely with the Development Director in planning and implementing the organization's fundraising efforts. These efforts include major donor campaigns, capital campaigns, grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies, overseeing the membership program, and developing a planned giving campaign.

The position manages 1 staff person whose responsibilities include admin and maintaining membership databases. 

Responsibilities:

The Development Director manages strategies and activities for membership and donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations. She/he works closely with the Executive Director.

  • Identify, research, document, cultivate, build, and solidify relationships with new and established contributors; analyze historic patterns of giving and develop strategies to encourage new gifts and identify new sources of revenues, as well as increase current contributions; work with the Executive Director and appropriate staff/Board members to arrange meetings and directly solicit gifts from major prospects and maintain relationships through mail, phone, or in-person contacts; oversee direct-mail campaigns; and solicit grants.
  • Oversee the administrative support for development and membership, including ensuring that donor and member acknowledgements are completed and appropriate records, prospect lists, and mailing lists are maintained. Conduct annual performance evaluation.
  • Working with the Executive Director, draft a 5-year development plan for the organization
  • Work with in-house staff to organize and implement fundraising events.
  • Participate in special assignments or projects as representative of the organization.
  • Participate in development-related functions, such as marketing, design/preparation of print materials, event logistics, and post-event follow up based on individual skills and office needs.
  • Work with appropriate staff to develop grant proposals for foundations and corporations.
  • Develop a comprehensive planned-giving program.
  • Expand corporate sponsorship program based on direct solicitation.

Board of Directors Relations:

  • Work with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director to advance strategies to initiate and meet fundraising goals.
  • Develop fundraising training for Directors, staff and other leadership volunteers.
  • Present periodic development updates to the Board of Directors.

Development Office Infrastructure:

  • Analyze for efficiency, and where necessary create or improve, systems to support all Development projects and operations.
  • Evaluate and optimize current membership/fundraising software (Exceed)
  • Supervise donor and gift record-keeping.
  • Conduct development research activities.
  • Oversee the management of databases and all records, files, and gift processing.
  • Manage bi-annual appeal letters, membership renewals, donations, acquisitions and acknowledgements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of professional fundraising experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven experience in designing and managing development programs.
  • Experience with developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members, donors, staff and partners.
  • Ability to work as a leader and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational, management, and administrative skills, with the ability to multi-task.
  • Proven ability to solicit and close financial agreements with donors.
  • Familiarity with word processing (i.e., Microsoft Office), spreadsheet, and database management software.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and/or weekends when needed.
  • Familiarity with Pt. Reyes National Seashore and/or National Park Service a plus.

Compensation: 50k-65k DOE plus benefits
