Summary of Responsibilities:
The Development Director plays a key role at the Ecology Center by providing leadership on fundraising activities to support our environmental education programs and services. This position plans and implements strategies that build our pool of givers and deepens their commitment to the organization, increases our membership through retention and acquisition strategies, and develops our grant fundraising capacity. The Development Director works closely with staff responsible for the Environmental Resource Center and Store, Terrain magazine, and the Berkeley Farmers' Markets to meet these goals. This position reports to and supports the Executive Director with long-term planning, participation in project development, administrative issues, and organizational effectiveness.
Duties Include:
Member and Donor Cultivation:
- Developing and implementing organizational fundraising plans for broad community support
- Managing direct mail efforts including language development, printer and mailing house contracts, deposits, tracking results
- Managing donor database
- Work with Executive Director in identifying and developing relationships with potential major donors
- Overseeing workplace giving activities through EarthShare
- Designing and implementing membership drives, direct solicitations, and fundraising events
Foundation Cultivation:
- Working with Program Managers to develop grant ideas, projects, and programs
- Assisting staff with preparation of grant applications and proposals
- Work with Executive Director in identifying and developing relationships with potential foundation funders
- Manage grants database
- Work with Program Managers to ensure timely reporting to funders
Program Development:
- Participate in planning and pragmatic development for the Center’s environmental education programs
- Participate in designing strategies to reach, educate and include a more diverse audience
- Building projects and programs that foster and model community sustainability
- Strategizing outreach activities that promote the Center’s resources and services
Administrative Management:
- Assisting Executive Director with strategic planning and implementation, general management, and organizational development
- Attending relevant committee meetings, Board meetings and staff meetings
- Developing and monitoring fundraising budgets
- Providing staff support to Board fundraising committee
