The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) is a 28 year old resident-led, non-profit planning and organizing group in the Roxbury/North Dorchester area of Boston. Its mission is to empower Dudley residents to organize, plan for, create, and control a vibrant, diverse and high quality neighborhood in collaboration with community partners. In order to realize the neighborhood's vision of a vibrant urban village, DSNI focuses on 3 strategic areas: sustainable and economic development, youth opportunities and development, and community empowerment.
Position Overview:
The Community Organizer will work with DSNI's Sustainable and Economic Development team to implement organizational initiatives around affordable housing, community planning, and economic development.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct community outreach and develop resident and merchant involvement in issues affecting the quality of life in the neighborhood
- Participate in regular meetings of neighborhood and resident associations in the Dudley area
- Monitor zoning, licensing and other regulatory processes and inform and engage residents in these efforts
- Work with other committees and staff as part of DSNI's overall organizing efforts to build our urban village including the Open House, Annual Meeting, Multi-Cultural Festival, Walk for Dudley and community cleanups
- Conduct outreach to DNI Community Land Trust residents
- Engage and support residents to play an active role in neighborhood revitalization planning processes
- Connect neighborhood families to job and educational opportunities
- Support campaigns to promote affordable housing and economic opportunities
- Support other organizational work/activities and connect community members to these areas
- Opportunities for professional growth by attending workshops, conferences and trainings.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to DSNI's mission and organizing principles
- Community organizing experience preferred
- Familiarity with Dudley neighborhood and DSNI's work
- Bilingual English/Spanish or Cape Verdean Creole strongly preferred
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Computer skills a plus
- Experience working in a multicultural community
- Ability to take initiative while working as part of a team
- Willingness to work flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
- College degree preferred
