Description

Established in 1985, SPW is a non-partisan development charity dedicated to making young people central to the development process. Every year SPW recruits over 800 volunteers aged 18-28 to work on high-impact health & environmental education programs with communities in rural India, Nepal, South, Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia & Zimbabwe.

Uniquely, American, European and Australian volunteers live and work alongside volunteer partners recruited from the areas we work in Africa and Asia. Our programs are endorsed by the government of each country we work in, as well as the World Bank, UNAIDS, UNICEF and UNESCO.

We are looking to fill positions on our Community Resource (Environment) Programs in Nepal, Uganda and Tanzania. All volunteers will receive 4-6 weeks in-country training that covers language, context-specific information, non-formal education methods, participatory rural appraisal techniques, and appropriate rural technologies (ARTs). Volunteers will then work (in small mixed nationality teams) in rural communities where they will coordinate with schools and the wider community to identify and resolve key environmental and health issues.

Generally these issues focus around introducing and encouraging:

Sustainable use of natural resource - community forestry, establishing clean water sources, organic farming techniques & soil conservation
Waste management - sanitation, drainage, waste recycling
Appropriate rural technologies (ARTs) - providing community members with access to information and skills training in relation to low cost technology e.g. fuel-efficient stoves or organic agricultural techniques.
Income generation projects - to enable households, women's and community groups to improve their livelihoods.

Candidates should be 18-28 years old with an interest in sustainable development. We are particularly looking for highly motivated individuals to work in partnership with local communities; excellent communication and teamwork skills; cultural awareness and flexibility; good humor and patience.
