~ The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation was created to support and strengthen the national system of marine sanctuaries. ~

NMSF works closely with the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries to connect the American public to the ocean and Great Lakes through these special places.

Applicants must provide their own housing and transportation. We are happy to work around class schedules and with colleges/departments to provide class credit. Funding may be available for stipends and out-of-pocket expenses.


Position Overview
 

NMSF is seeking a communications intern to work a minimum of 15 hours per week in the summer of 2015. The intern's primary responsibility will be to assist the NMSF Communications Coordinator with ongoing projects designed to increase public engagement with national marine sanctuaries. 

Responsibilities  

Major Responsibilities 

  • Monitor and develop content for NMSF's two active social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter), and find new ways to engage and expand our audience
  • Stand up a new Pinterest account for NMSF, and develop a plan to populate the account with content and grow and engage our audience 

Based on skills and interest, the intern may be able to take on special projects. Examples include: 

  • Assist with preparations for NMSF's signature program, Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW)
  • Assist in developing content for NMSF's e-newsletter and website 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree; preferred majors include communications, public relations, marketing 
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Familiarity with social media trends and best practices, especially Facebook and Twitter
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work both independently and with others
  • Attention to detail and highly organized
  • Interest in ocean conservation issues a plus
