Tufts Office of Sustainability serves as a resource, a catalyst, and an advocate for environmental sustainability at Tufts. The OOS is supported by the university and works to:
- Enhance Tufts' reputation as a leader
- Ensure that Tufts' sustainability efforts are comprehensive and focused on meaningful projects
- Identify, evaluate, and implement opportunities for sustainability leadership
- Promote the strength of Tufts sustainability efforts
- Measure Tufts' progress toward commitments and regional goals
- Identify sustainability opportunities that may provide Tufts with significant benefit such as reduced risk, financial savings, and avoided problems/fines
- Integrate sustainability issues into research, scholarship and student life
Position Overview:
This is a part-time position at 21 hours per week. This is also a one year limited appointment with the potential for extension.
The position of Communications and Outreach Specialist will be responsible for the Office of Sustainability's internal and external messaging and public relations with its many constituencies, with a goal of promoting Tufts' sustainability efforts to the public and building a culture of environmental sustainability on campus.
He/she will create annual reports, brochures, and news articles about sustainability on campus as well as maintain the OOS website including updating current design and content. The Communications and Outreach Specialist will also create social marketing plans and outreach materials including posters, flyers, prompts, emails, and other materials in support of behavior change initiatives. She/he will also help measure, record and communicate Tufts' progress toward its sustainability commitments and regional greenhouse gas goals.
In addition, the Communications and Outreach Specialist will have the opportunity to help design and organize outreach events, provide support to Tufts staff "Eco-Ambassadors," and teach sustainability practices to faculty, staff and students.
Qualifications:
Basic Requirements:
- BS in environmental science, communications, marketing, public relations, business or related field OR at least 5 years of related experience in social marketing including web communications, market research and behavior change campaigns with a High School diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years of direct experience in campus sustainability, institutional change, marketing and/or community engagement campaigns
- Experience with all Microsoft Office applications as well as graphic design programs
- Project management experience
- Experience in social marketing, public relations, design and print production
- Excellent communications and outreach skills (writing, conflict management, presentation, inter-personal)
- Must be able to initiate and implement projects with teams and work independently with little direct oversight
- Must be creative, enthusiastic, and entrepreneurial with a high level of energy and initiative; high degree of flexibility, adaptability and general ability to respond to emerging opportunities in a constantly changing environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Progressive experience in communications and Public Relations.
- A significant graphic design portfolio.
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of environmental sustainability issues, green living, energy conservation, recycling, etc.
- Excellent managerial skills.
- Knowledge of HTML, proficiency in Photoshop and desktop publishing programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver or equivalent and computer Science or database management experience.
