The City of Austin, Texas (pop. 770,000), a world class city located in the Texas Hill Country and known for its lakes, parks, music and high tech/college town vitality is seeking to fill the position of Climate Program Manager. 

Position Overview: 

This senior management position provides strong, inspirational leadership for the Austin Climate Protection Program, across all City departments and community-wide, representing and advancing the city as a national leader and model for climate protection and sustainability. 

Reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer, the position will manage 8 employees provided by a dotted line reporting structure through Distributed Energy Services at Austin Energy. 

Responsibilities: 

The Climate Program Manager will:

  • Assess progress to date in achieving city's climate-related goals. Provide strategic leadership regarding feasibility, costs, benefits, timeline, internal negotiations, and priorities in achieving greenhouse gas reductions to meet citywide targets and individual department plans.
  • Assist the Chief Sustainability Officer to integrate climate initiatives into broader sustainability goals, and assist with the ongoing growth and evolution of the City's Sustainability Office. Help the City maintain its position as a national sustainability leader.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to existing staff in the climate protection program and citywide climate action team regarding steps to success, creative collaboration, barrier removal, and continuous improvement and innovation. Navigate the challenges of "dotted line" reporting structure across the city's organizational structure.
  • Track international, federal and state trends, policies and funding opportunities that should help to position the program for success, influence program direction, leverage emerging opportunities, and secure additional resources.
  • Develop community relationships with business and environmental leaders to facilitate an ongoing positive dialogue and actions towards climate protection. Assess best methods and opportunities to broadly disseminate messages and behavior change tools throughout the Austin community.

Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors degree from an accredited 4-year college or university with major course work in Climate Change, Environmental Studies, Sustainable Business, Resource Management, Public Policy and Administration, Business Administration or a related field, plus 7 years of related experience, 3 of which was in a lead or supervisory capacity.  A Master's Degree may substitute for experience up to 2 years.
