Position Overview

If you are world changer, Greenpeace needs you. We are in search of a bold strategic, passionate and visionary individual  to lead our Climate Campaign. This innovative and forward thinking leader will understand the urgency of the time, the geopolitical landscape and move rapidly to impact change through movement building and people power.  

The Climate Campaign Director is responsible for the development of the long-term GPUS Climate Campaign Strategy, ensuring it aligns with the goals identified in Greenpeace’s Global Framework and that relevant campaign projects advance that strategy in measureable ways. The Director will serve as the public face and voice of climate work for Greenpeace US and as a  strategic advisor  and thought partner to program leadership and project teams.

Additionally they will understand the necessity for climate action to be interwoven with and translate across broader social movements, including inextricable interconnectedness to environmental justice. This position reports to the Campaigns Director.

Responsibilities   

  • Work with a multi-functional team to develop medium and long term (5+ years) campaign strategies.
  • Develop and communicate a compelling vision and strategy  for our climate work to staff, supporters, donors, and allies.
  • Provide "command intent" - a short, clear summary of the rationale for our work, that can be interpreted at any level of the organization. This should aid teams and individuals in prioritization and quick decision making.
  • Serve as a strategic adviser to project teams and Programmatic Management Teams on climate issues. Ensure projects are aligned with long term campaign strategies. Provide regular hands-on support during project inception and launch, while empowering project teams to drive implementation.
  • Work closely with project leaders to evaluate results and adjust approach as appropriate.
  • Work with other campaign directors and senior leaders to create a compelling and cohesive narrative for Greenpeace’s work and  specifically how the climate campaign contributes to that broader narrative.
  • Maintain awareness of issues and trends in environmental, racial justice, social change, and democracy movements to identify emerging opportunities to amplify trends and disruptions within the context of ongoing campaign activities.
  • Maintain a broad network of allies, experts, and high level contacts.
  • Build relationships with foundations and other high level donors.
  • Represent the organization publicly, including media interviews, speaking events, and writing.
  • Work with international colleagues to develop projects that fit global and US goals.
  • Strong commitment to the organizations values of embedding justice and promoting equity diversity and inclusion both internally and externally.  

Qualifications

  • Superb management skills: Demonstrated ability to lead complex and diverse teams to achieve ambitious results, ideally in areas with a focus on climate change through a social justice lens.
  • Sound judgment and willingness to make tough and strategic decisions when confronted with difficult choices.
  • Extraordinary interpersonal skills: Able to quickly build trust, credibility, and goodwill with a wide range of audiences, including staff, allies, supporters, and Board members, and across lines of race, gender, class and other identities.
  • Strong problem-solver: Can anticipate and spot challenges and drive solutions that staff agree with and that work.
  • Strong lens on issues of race and equity: Can thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and brings a deep commitment to advancing these values. Able to identify ways that bias impacts management and can drive solutions to lead to unbiased outcomes.
  • Policy and issue expertise: Demonstated environmental science and complex policy and working knowledge of current environmental climate issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and creatively.
  • Strong communication skills - ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing; public speaking skills; ability to make effective presentations and communication across differences.
  • Strong project leadership and project planning skills to enable the delivery of projects to time, to budget and to deliver clear objectives.
  • Demonstrated understanding of effective online communication to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to represent Greenpeace and our work effectively to media, Greenpeace donors and others as needed.
  • Ability to make and maintain strategic relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with journalists.
  • Organizational skills, including experience in project administration and ability to build and manage teams.
  • Able and willing to travel as needed.
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours.
  • Commitment to progressive values and peaceful direct action as a means to effect change. 

Experience / Accomplishments

  • Excellent writing skills and a record of public speaking engagements.
  • 7- 10 years experience in public interest campaigning with in depth knowledge of the cultural, political and social economic issues related to climate change.  
  • Experience at management level in non profit organization, working closely with the executive director and management team, many peer managers across departments and supervising staff.
