Green City Market, a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, is celebrating its 11th season as the city`s only sustainable green market. With over 45 sustainable or certified organic farmers and thousands of shoppers, Green City Market features a wide variety of education programs including Chef Cooking Demonstrations; Club Sprouts and the Edible Gardens in the Lincoln Park Farm in the Zoo; Savor the Seasons Taste Education Series; The Localvore Challenge, and Farmer education workshops.

From the first year in 1999 next to the Chicago Theatre to the present time, Green City Market has expanded into a vital "green" Market at the south end of Lincoln Park that Alice Waters calls "the best sustainable market in the country". 
 
Position Overview: 
 
Job reports to Executive Director. 
 
The Chef Farm Forager and Market Manager will oversee 2 key roles at Green City Market:

  1. connect farmers to restaurants in Chicago and established networks to ensure farmer-chef communication and interaction and recruit more farmers to join the Green City Market,, and
  2. oversee and maintain the smooth operation of The Market.

The Outdoor Market runs from May - October, every Wednesday and Saturday from 7:00am to 1:00pm at the south end of Lincoln Park. The Indoor Market, currently located in the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, operates during November and December on Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00am to 1:00pm and the 1st and 3rd Saturday January - April. 
 
Responsibilities: 
 
Increase the flow of local food, from the four Midwest states of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin, to city's restaurants, population and Green City Market. 
 
Produce (at minimum) weekly report to be distributed to Green City Market Executive Director, chefs and farmers and a database of farmer and chef contact information. Report to focus on maintaining and strengthening relationships with existing farmers, strengthening relationships between farmers and chefs, establishing contacts with farming agencies, building relationships within the industry as well as academic institutions like the University of Illinois Extension Services, and developing an understanding of the challenges within the farming industry. 
 
Oversee operations and logistics of Market including, but not limited to, arriving by 5:00am, managing set up and strike for the day (chef demo station, sound equipment, volunteer desk, crepe station, farmer locations, parking needs, signage, port-o-potties, coffee and water deliveries, EBT machine, clean up, composting, food donations and pick up, assisting with tours, special guests, musicians, book signings, and logging hourly traffic counts) 

  • Assist customers and farmers/vendors with inquiries. 
  • Assist with successful implementation of marketing and promotional programs. 
  • Oversee inventory of supplies (cups, lids, stirs, sugar, etc.), paper towel, toilet paper, cleaning solution for tables, stakes and weights for tents, market bags, tablecloths, various flyers, etc. 
  • Oversee veggie valet. Control and manage flow of traffic and pick up service. 
  • Apply for necessary permits. 
  • Participate on Application Committee. 
  • Work with Executive Director to oversee and arrange chef demonstrations and follow up. 
  • Manage Assistant Market Manager. 
  • Assist with other duties as needed. 

Qualifications: 
 
Bachelor`s degree preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license, insured car, a computer and access to the internet. Applicant must have a solid understanding of sustainable farming practices, be self-motivated, possessing proficient interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Individual will display leadership qualities as well as the ability to take and follow guidelines mandated by superiors.

This position requires that the individual is capable of relaying information and acting as a liaison between farmers, Green City Market staff and Board of Directors, and chefs/restaurateurs. Individual must have the aptitude to work with a diverse staff and workforce.  
 
Compensation: Full time position is budgeted at $40,000. Vacation and holiday pay. Health insurance included (employee contribution of $100 per month).
