The U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization of over 18,000 corporate and organizational members from every sector of the building industry united to transform the building marketplace to sustainability, is currently seeking a personable and detail-oriented individual to serve on the Chapters team.

Position Overview:

USGBC's chapter network is comprised of 75+ volunteer-driven non-profit organizations, or chapters, which serve as the local presence of USGBC across eight regions of the United States. The Chapter Coordinator is the primary liaison between USGBC national and the local chapter. This person works to improve and further develop USGBC's Chapters Program through building strong relationships with chapter volunteer and staff leadership.

Focusing on the ongoing development of the chapter network and regional councils, the Chapter Coordinator provides support and outstanding customer service and guidance on areas such as chapter governance, program development and day-to-day operations. This individual delivers valuable resources, initiatives and opportunities to the volunteer community with the goal of further increasing the ability of chapters to serve as the local presence of USGBC through education, advocacy and outreach.

Responsibilities:

  • Relationships:
    • Builds and maintains relationships with chapter leaders and staff
    • Possesses knowledge of USGBC's various programs, resources and offerings and is able to connect chapter volunteer leaders and staff with the appropriate USGBC subject matter expert, when appropriate
    • Acts as an "account executive" for 2 regions, the chapters/branches within those regions and their regional councils
    • Works with volunteer leaders, including chapter chairs, boards and committee chairs, as well as executive directors and administrators to maximize their effectiveness in leading their respective chapters
    • Works closely with Chapter Growth Consultants (CGCs) assigned to the chapters in their regions
    • Maintains strong relationships with those USGBC departments that interact with chapter leaders, including but not limited to Advocacy, Education and Market Development
    • Assists with the development and/or sourcing of resources for chapter leaders including non-profit management resources
    • Ensures that critical USGBC programmatic and policy updates are disseminated to chapter leaders
    • Guides new groups through the stages of development towards becoming a self-sustaining local USGBC chapter or branch
    • Holds chapter volunteers and staff accountable for assigned task teams and other duties
  • Administration / Support:
    • Develops a complete understanding of both regions and each chapter in those regions
    • Gathers pertinent documentation and data from each chapter on an annual basis, e.g., assessments, annual plans, budgets, legal documents
    • Participates in and assists in facilitation of regional council and chapter meetings
    • Verifies that chapters are following requirements of USGBC Chapter Charter, applicable policies set by the USGBC board, etc.
    • Monitor and track travel and meeting expenses for regional board members, regional council members, Chapter Steering Committee members, chapter growth consultants and chapter leaders
    • Participates in regional council and Chapter Steering Committee task teams
    • Maintains and updates chapter databases, including contact lists, extranet, status lists and territory documentation
    • Maintains chapter development documentation, e.g. chapter charter, IRS letter of determination and IRS form 990.
  • Resources / Communications
    • Actively participates in and contributes to departmental education and communications efforts, including newsletters, surveys and listservs
    • Represents USGBC as needed at chapter events, including public speaking as needed
    • Assists with the planning and coordination of Chapters Department events, such as regional meetings, chapter leader retreat, advocate trainings and chapter events at Greenbuild International Conference and Expo
    • Identifies new opportunities for chapters to build their capacity and further the mission of USGBC
    • Other projects/responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in a dynamic office environment with a nonprofit or other mission-driven organization
  • Excellent communications skills (both verbal and written)
  • Team player with outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Very strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders with grace and diplomacy
  • Ability to multi-task and troubleshoot on a wide range of issues
  • Ability to handle rapidly shifting priorities
  • Experience preferred in:
    • Non-profit and chapter relations
    • Event planning
    • Marketing and/or Communications
  • Budget tracking skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of/proficiency in Web site and e-mail/html applications a plus
  • Adaptability to new technologies and ability to learn new software applications
  • Commitment to USGBC mission
  • Ability to travel within the United States up to 30% of the year
