Eureka Recycling, based in the Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, is the only organization in Minnesota that specializes in zero waste. The organization's services, programs, and policy work present solutions to the social, environmental, economic and health problems caused by wasting.
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Eureka Recycling's mission is to demonstrate that waste is preventable, not inevitable. Because this mission is realized by any person or group that chooses to prevent waste, Eureka Recycling provides opportunities for everyone to experience firsthand that waste can be prevented.
Perhaps most well-known for its $9 million annual recycling operations, Eureka Recycling has provided curbside and apartment recycling services, education, and advocacy since 2001. Eureka Recycling also has a wide range of other initiatives designed to prevent the needless wasting of our discards through reuse, recycling, composting, waste reduction, producer responsibility and more. These initiatives directly provide over 100 jobs for the individuals who work here and demonstrate our mission every day in the work that they do.
Position Overview:
Working with the Director of Business Development and other members of the Business Development team, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for business planning and analysis work to maintain and improve existing programs, such as zero waste event services, commercial composting and marketing recyclable materials. Will develop new revenue generating zero waste programs based on the organization's strategic direction, and play an integral role in the day to day operations of existing programs, including hands-on work with partners and at events, and will be responsible for leading a collaborative business planning team.
The successful candidate will work with the finance, operations, customer service and communications teams to ensure the delivery of services that fit into the organization's structure, mission and goals. A thorough understanding of financial projections, revenue models and cash flow will be needed to implement programs during a time of tight budgets and economic uncertainty.
Reports to: Director of Business Development
Responsibilities:
- Analyze the social, environmental, and economic impacts of business opportunities and provide objective analysis of other opportunities to the organization's senior management team. Conduct business planning and market analysis. Work with the business development team to write and present business plans and financial projections for current and new business ideas identified through the organizations' strategic planning work. Lead a collaborative business planning team to share these responsibilities and develop these skills in other members of the business development team.
- Coordinate communication and decision-making relevant to business development programs among the customer service, finance, operations, communications and business development teams to meet the program objectives and provide comprehensive services to customers.
- Manage initial customer expectations (via good customer service) for new and prospective customers and analyze customer requests for service.
- Provide potential and existing customers with logistical consultation and analysis within the context of Eureka Recycling's zero waste mission (i.e. conducting site visits to prospective customers to analyze waste, recycling and compostable streams and quantifying opportunities for diversion) in order to develop and/or expand customer base.
- Support the work of developing programs, demonstrating our mission by working at zero-waste events, training customers on zero-waste practices, setting up new accounts, sorting waste, etc.
- Work with the finance team to improve, develop, and implement systems for tracking, reporting and billing.
- Assist the Business Development Director to administer contracts for commercial recycling customers and to develop and maintain relationships with end markets for recyclable materials and third-party haulers to ensure excellent customer service, reliable delivery of services provided, competitive pricing, and retention of customer base.
- Assist the business development director in the marketing of recyclable commodities to existing markets and ensure competitive pricing.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5 years of experience in managing and developing business for a social entrepreneurial organization utilizing proven project management techniques, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with an environmentally focused organization is preferable.
- BS/BA degree in business administration, marketing, finance, entrepreneurial business, or environmental studies, or equivalent.
- Effective analytical and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to create financial projections and understand an organizational budget.
- Proven effective skills in public speaking and presentation, interpersonal and written communications.
- Experience successfully balancing multiple tasks simultaneously with attention to detail under minimal supervision.
- Ability to build teams, mentor staff, and to make decisions effectively with others in a team based environment.
- Accomplished computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and database skills.
- Extensive knowledge of and a personal interest about the environment and resource conservation issues with a commitment to working with community-based organizations and a culturally diverse constituency.

- Has a thorough grasp of and commitment to the organization's mission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with hands-on, detail oriented work in the food service, custodial or other related industries.
- Experience with logistical analysis related to business "waste" materials i.e. waste audits.
- Prefer familiarity with LEED or other similar environmental certification standards.
- Effective supervision and staff development experience.
Working Conditions:
Working conditions on-site are normal for an office environment.
Working conditions off-site may include examining and weighing recycling, composting and trash, carrying equipment, working outdoors, driving a company pickup truck or other vehicle, and will require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
