WWF China has developed a major work program with the Chinese financial sector.  This work is being delivered via one of WWFs initiatives, China for a Global Shift Initiative (China SHIFT), which is one of 14 global priority programs within the WWF network. China SHIFT is working with individual institutions, regulators and across the finance sector as a whole to promote more responsible lending and investment practices.

This work forms one of the 4 key programs of the China SHIFT program and is of strategic importance to both the WWF China office and wider WWF network. The post will suit a senior and experienced individual who is used to operating at the highest levels with FIs and regulators with strong environment and sustainability focus. The Program Manager will be supported in this program by a small team of Beijing based staff, as well as WWF network specialists.

Position Overview:

  • Leads the implementation of the sustainable banking and financing programme for the Shift Initiative. 
  • Works with key Chinese financial institutions (FIs) on sustainability within their core business to promote more responsible lending and investment and to reduce the environmental and social impacts of private sector activity both in China and in WWF's priority places globally.  

Responsibilities:

  • To organize and coordinate high-level WWF network participation in events in China and elsewhere that supports WWFs objectives in terms of its work with the financial sector.
  • To manage and grow the Forum for Environment and Development (FED) network
  • To develop future cooperation with national authorities, academic institution, government & aid agencies, NGOs, international organizations, business and other stakeholders, and establish a network of partners on sustainability in the banking and finance sector.
  • To provide a cross cutting support service to other WWF Network Initiatives as they engage with the Chinese financial sector, and specifically to support the work of the Market Transformation Initiative (MTI) in its work with Chinese corporate and FIs
  • To prepare required policy, technical and briefing papers as needed
  • To ensure the preparation and timely submission to donors of annual work plans and budgets as well as technical and financial reports according to agreed network standards.
  • To follow up with particular development proposals as necessary in WWF China and with rest of WWF network; provide supports and review project proposals, TORs and contracts for fund raising and interventions in the region.
  • To manage staff in the Shift Initiative's Banking and Finance Program
  • Fulfill other related tasks as agreed and required by China SHIFT program leader

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in finance, economics or the environment which is relevant to the post.
  • At least 5 years working experience in the area of finance and sustainability and demonstrated knowledge about banking, finance, investment, environment and sustainable development issues. Environmental/sustainability (lead) staff in a financing sector desired.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to analyze sustainability issues and to effectively communicate these to financial institution partners and others who WWF is working with
  • Strong coordination and team work experience and excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a networked environment (the WWF family), with a proven ability to define and defend priorities
  • Project management and communication skills
  • Good ability to speak, read and write in English and Chinese
  • Dynamic, creative and outgoing personality and commitment to nature conservation.
  • Good computer skills
