Position Overview:

The Department of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning in 2012 at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally-recognized program of outreach, research, and teaching in the area of urban food production systems.

The appointment will be 60% Extension, 30% Research, and 10% Instruction.

Responsibilities:

Areas of activity could include, but are not limited to:

  • Research on space intensive food production systems, soil and environmental quality in urban settings, or production systems that maximize economic sustainability.
  • Outreach will include training and consultation in innovative food production systems and controlled environments adapted to urban settings of the upper Midwest.
  • Leadership in, and communication with, regional food production groups is expected.
  • The incumbent will also be responsible for teaching a course in urban and regional food systems including controlled environments, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and performing university and community service as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD is required for this position, and postdoctoral experience is preferred
  • Candidates must have a strong foundation in agricultural science
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to design and conduct field-based research leading to advances in urban and regional food systems
  • Knowledge and experience in controlled environment production
  • Ability to attract extramural funding and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and organizations from a wide range of public and private perspectives
  • Preference will be given to candidates that present evidence of excellent outreach and teaching skills, a record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and success attracting extramural funding
