The Sustainable Construction and Construction Management in the Department of Construction Management and Wood Products Engineering at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, New York (SUNY-ESF) is hiring an Assistant or Associate Professor, academic year, tenure-track position.

The sustainable construction faculty position in Construction Management and Wood Products Engineering will support our new concentration area in Sustainable Wood Frame Construction by providing expertise in one or more of the following areas: environmental rating systems, lean production and life cycle analysis, sustainable wood-frame construction. In addition, this position will provide support of our core construction management curriculum in at least one of the following areas: building codes, integrated design, commissioning, and mechanical and electrical systems.

The position will fill teaching needs in a combination of the following areas: Mechanical and Electrical Systems, Construction Methods and Equipment, Construction Documentation, Building Codes and specialized courses in the areas of sustainable construction such as Sustainable Wood-Frame Construction, Environmental Rating Systems, Life Cycle Analysis, or Integrated Design.

The candidate is expected to contribute to SUNY-ESF's mission to advance knowledge and skills and to promote leadership necessary for the stewardship of both the natural and built environment.

Job Duties:

The applicant will be expected to perform teaching, research and public service in sustainable construction and construction management, specifically in one or more of the following areas: sustainable construction, implementation of sustainable design through construction methods and materials, sustainable wood-frame construction, environmental rating systems, lean production and life cycle analysis. The applicant is expected to teach courses in construction management, such as, construction documentation, mechanical and electrical systems, construction methods and equipment; as well as develop new courses in sustainable construction. The applicant is expected to obtain extramural funding for research, particularly in the areas of sustainable design implementation and sustainable wood-frame construction.

Research

The candidate will develop a research program based on extramural funding and working with professional organizations to support graduate students in research in areas related to sustainable construction.  Particular focus on implementation of sustainable design and construction in project applications, and the management thereof will be expected.  The new faculty member will work with current CM and WPE faculty to assist in the development and functioning of a Construction Research Institute at ESF.

Outreach

The candidate should be involved in outreach activities to provide sustainable construction knowledge to professionals and the community through workshops, demonstration programs, and informational web pages.

Qualifications:

A PhD degree in construction management or related field is required. The candidate must possess experience or expertise in sustainable construction. Strong communication skills and experience are expected, including oral, written and web-based communication. Qualifications will be considered relative to rank: Assistant or Associate Professor.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of two years experience in teaching in a construction management or related field.  A minimum of three years professional experience, including academic or non-academic experience in any or all of the following areas: sustainable wood-frame construction; building systems, including mechanical and electrical systems; structural design; life cycle analysis; and environmental rating systems.

About the Position:

The Construction Management Program at SUNY-ESF is a strong and vibrant program with both freshman and transfer students as well as a number of graduate students who pursue MPS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees.  The program develops the skills of its graduates in the traditional construction management field of expertise while offering several unique features.  These include an engineering component along with coursework related to wood and wood products.  Recently the program has been adding offerings which address sustainable construction.  As a result of our recent strategic planning efforts we will be adding a concentration area in sustainable wood frame construction to provide a growing number of students the opportunity to select coursework from our Wood Products Engineering Program as well.

There are opportunities for service learning as well as a strong internship program. We have strong stable relationships with employers throughout New York State which allows us to offer the internship program as well as our graduates having many opportunities to find employment upon graduation.  Our graduates also have national employment opportunities with a wide variety of construction and construction management firms.

An additional unique characteristic of our program is the institutional relationship with Syracuse University.  Our students are able to take coursework at Syracuse University in the engineering and management areas of study.  There are several minors that are available to the students to broaden their background prior to graduation.

We are currently completing the renovation of our building and will be moving into the new facilities over the summer. The newly renovated facility includes the latest in technology and materials, and has the goal of obtaining the Silver rating in the LEED system.  New laboratories will provide spaces for research in the following areas: construction safety, construction methods and equipment, residential construction as well as indoor environmental quality and sustainable construction.
