New Ventures is a business accelerator that works toward long-term, sustainable natural resource use by supporting environmentally- and socially-responsible enterprises in emerging economies. We identify profitable small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) that generate unique social and environmental benefits and provide them with business advisory services and access to capital.
New Ventures identifies transformative business models in critical sectors such as clean energy and water, and we work with partners to scale these business models in emerging market economies. Additionally, we work with local and international investment communities and networks to help further develop capital resources available to these enterprises.
In collaboration with local partners, New Ventures operates non-profit centers of sustainable entrepreneurship in Brazil, Mexico, China, Indonesia and India.
Position Summary:
The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a dynamic Associate with relevant investment experience for a primary role in its New Ventures (http://www.new-ventures.org/) program.
Major Responsibilities:
The Associate will be responsible for research and related activities that influence capital providers to invest in SMEs in emerging economies that have strong environmental and social benefits. The Associate will have a lead research role in New Ventures' Accelerating Clean Energy Markets project, which seeks to increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency SMEs in emerging economies such as India.
The research focuses on studying potential innovations on financing mechanisms currently being used for clean energy SME investments in India and globally, and the work will eventually include piloting innovative financial mechanisms that can help bolster these kinds of investments in India. The Associate will also help develop and implement strategies which will help increase the capacity of mainstream investors to transfer capital into green SMEs.
Qualifications
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Interest in private-sector solutions to sustainable development
- 3-5 years of work experience related to investment, finance and/or investment management (e.g. venture capital, private equity, investment banking, etc.). Experience with SMEs is an advantage.
- Ability and desire to interact with investors
- Experience in the energy sector is an advantage.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential
- Degree in business administration, finance, or economics is strongly preferred. Other degrees may be suitable based on work experience. A Master's degree is an advantage.
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point) and the Internet
- Willingness to travel
Salary and benefits
