The Southern Environmental Law Center is currently accepting applications for an Associate Attorney position in its Charlottesville, VA office.

This entry-level position is open to recent law graduates, attorneys completing clerkships, and practicing attorneys with a start date of as soon as possible.  This attorney may have the opportunity to focus on work within SELC’s Land & Community Program, which advocates for sustainable transportation and land use and healthy communities for all.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an organization that is successfully addressing some of the most important and challenging environmental and public health issues in the South and the nation. Associates gain valuable experience and knowledge working with more senior attorneys on litigation and legal advocacy in state and federal courts and before regulatory agencies. The term for associate positions is two years with the potential for a third year.

All SELC staff members are required to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 prior to working in any of our offices. All staff are currently working a hybrid work model of 3 in-office working days, at a minimum, and up to 2 remote working days per week.

  • Attorneys with a range of interests and experiences would be strong candidates for this position.  We encourage attorneys with the following interests or experiences to apply:
    • Litigation experience.
    • Background in environmental law.
    • Experience in land use or transportation planning.

Compensation:

The salary range is $74,000 – 84,000, depending on experience, and SELC offers an excellent benefits package. For more details about our benefits package, please visit our Careers page.
